In a significant move to bolster its position in the enterprise artificial intelligence services market, Microsoft (MSFT.US) has announced a $2.5 billion investment to establish a new operational business unit named Microsoft Frontier Company.
The primary objective of this new division is to assist enterprise clients in more efficiently deploying and implementing AI solutions.
Microsoft stated that Microsoft Frontier Company will deploy 6,000 industry experts and engineering technicians directly to client sites to collaborate on the design, innovation, deployment, and continuous optimization of large-scale AI systems in partnership with the enterprises.
The company has appointed Rodrigo Kede Lima as the president of this new unit. Lima was previously responsible for Microsoft's sales operations across the Americas and Asia.
Furthermore, Microsoft announced it has established Forward Deployed Engineering partnerships with global collaborators including Accenture (ACN.US), Capgemini, EY, KPMG, and PwC to accelerate the implementation of enterprise AI projects.
Forward Deployed Engineering involves embedding engineers and technical specialists directly at client business locations to tailor and deploy AI systems based on specific operational processes.
The launch of this new business unit coincides with a period of intensified competition among major cloud computing providers vying for the enterprise AI implementation market.
Previously, Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon (AMZN.US), also announced a $1 billion investment to create its own Forward Deployed Engineering unit, embedding engineers within enterprise clients seeking to deploy AI solutions.
