Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with all 100 US Senators in Washington on Tuesday evening, according to two Senate aides. The visit to the US capital is primarily to attend the funeral of the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
One of the aides indicated that the Senate could also begin voting on a Russia sanctions bill as early as during Zelenskyy’s visit. The legislation, originally championed by Senator Graham, had been stalled in Congress for roughly a year prior to his sudden death this month.
To build broader support, lawmakers have reduced the proposed tariff rate in the bill from a uniform 500% in its previous version down to 100%. However, the measure has also raised concerns on Capitol Hill over the potential for newly expanded presidential powers for Donald Trump.
