US Space Force Awards $32 Billion "Gold Dome" Missile Defense Contract to 12 Firms

Deep News03:30

The United States Space Force has issued contracts valued at $32 billion to twelve companies for the development of a space-based interceptor system. This initiative is a key component of the "Gold Dome" missile defense plan proposed by former President Donald Trump.

The Space Systems Command announced that a total of twenty Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreements have been awarded since last year, amounting to the substantial $32 billion sum. The selected companies include both established defense industry leaders and commercial space startups, such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, SpaceX, Anduril, General Dynamics Mission Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton, GITAI USA, Quindar, Sci-Tec, True Anomaly, and Turion Space.

The Space Force stated that the program will develop a "proliferated low Earth orbit interceptor constellation" capable of engaging incoming missiles during their boost, midcourse, and glide phases. Unlike traditional missile defense systems that rely on ground-based launches, the space-based interceptors would deploy weapons from orbit, enabling U.S. forces to counter threats earlier in a missile's flight path.

According to the plan, contractors are required to demonstrate an initial capability integrated into the "Gold Dome" architecture by the year 2028.

The overall "Gold Dome" program is projected to cost approximately $185 billion. Its objective is to establish a multi-layered missile defense "shield" protecting the U.S. homeland, integrating space-based sensors, advanced interceptors, and an artificial intelligence-driven command and control system. Officials from the Space Systems Command emphasized that as adversary capabilities evolve rapidly, acquisition strategies must accelerate to counter the increasing speed and maneuverability of modern missile threats.
