Tesla Recalls Over 14,000 Model Y SUVs in U.S. Over Missing Weight Labels

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on May 21 that Tesla will recall 14,575 Model Y SUVs from the 2025 and 2026 model years in the United States. The recall is due to the possibility that these vehicles left the factory without a federally required weight certification label.

According to NHTSA, the certification label must display key parameters such as the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating and curb weight. The absence of this label could prevent owners from knowing the vehicle's load capacity limit, posing a risk of unintentional overloading. Overloading can affect vehicle weight distribution, braking performance, and handling stability, increasing the likelihood of a collision during high-speed driving or lane changes. To date, there have been no reports of crashes, fatalities, or injuries related to this issue.

This recall covers vehicles produced during two periods: 2025 Model Y units manufactured between November 17, 2024, and February 24, 2025, and 2026 Model Y units manufactured between February 25, 2025, and April 21, 2026. The problem originated from inconsistent performance of an automated visual scanning tool at Tesla's Fremont factory over a five-month period, which failed to confirm the presence of the label on every vehicle. The company identified the issue and repaired the equipment on April 17. A manual double-check has now been added to the production line.

Unlike many recalls that can be resolved with a software update, this issue requires owners to bring their vehicles to a service center for inspection and to have the label installed free of charge. Tesla plans to begin mailing recall notifications to owners starting July 17. This is not the first time Tesla has faced a similar problem; in 2019, the company recalled a small number of Model 3 vehicles for the same reason.
