How can cross-regional industrial chain collaboration address shortcomings and enhance overall competitiveness to realize the dream of a world-class construction machinery cluster in Central China? The recent 2026 Hubei-Hunan Engineering Machinery Industry Cooperation Matchmaking Conference, held in Suizhou, Hubei, known as "China's Capital of Special Purpose Vehicles," provided a model for addressing this industrial development challenge.
At this conference, the industrial and information technology authorities of both provinces outlined their policy directions. The completion of a batch of heavyweight industrial chain cooperation projects has set a benchmark for the coordinated development of advanced manufacturing in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.
Currently, the global construction machinery industry is accelerating its transformation towards green, intelligent, and electric technologies, with a strong recovery momentum in the domestic sector. Statistics show China's engineering machinery import and export trade volume reached $62.743 billion in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 13.2%. From January to May 2026, the industry maintained double-digit export growth, with sales of electric and unmanned engineering equipment rising significantly. New quality productive forces have become the core lever for industrial competition.
Amid this strong development trend, domestic shortcomings such as regional supply-demand fragmentation between complete machine manufacturing and specialized supporting industries have become more apparent. The key to addressing this shortcoming is to break through geographical limitations and enhance overall competitiveness through cross-regional industrial chain collaboration.
The organization of this matchmaking conference is also based on the solid foundation for industrial collaborative development between the two provinces. Both Hunan and Hubei are located in the core area of the Yangtze River Midstream Urban Agglomeration, sharing cultural ties and symbiotic industries. Their engineering machinery and special purpose vehicle industries naturally complement each other.
Changsha, Hunan, is a global hub for the engineering machinery industry, hosting five of the world's top 50 engineering machinery companies, including Sany, Zoomlion, and Sunward Intelligent, with a rapidly developing remanufacturing sector. Hubei, leveraging its "Han-Shi-Sui-Xiang" automotive industry corridor, has built a comprehensive special purpose vehicle supporting industry cluster. Cities like Suizhou, Shiyan, Xiangyang, and Wuhan have ample production capacity in heavy-duty components, special modifications, and commercial vehicle chassis. A significant amount of high-quality supporting capacity awaits stable procurement channels from complete machine manufacturers, indicating vast potential for mutually beneficial industrial integration between the two provinces.
"Amid the wave of global industrial transformation, the engineering machinery industry in Central China must break down regional barriers and deepen collaboration to compete on the global stage," said Li Qi, Vice President of the China Machinery Industry Federation. He believes the path to achieving synergy includes establishing regular communication and cooperation mechanisms, jointly tackling challenges in green and intelligent equipment, co-developing domestic and international markets, and deeply cooperating on industry standard development and sharing, collectively propelling the Central China engineering machinery cluster towards world-class status.
Policy guidance and support form the foundation for industrial collaboration. Tang Yong, a member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the Hunan Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, stated that the matchmaking conference is a practical action by Hunan and Hubei to implement the strategies for the rise of Central China and new-type industrialization. Hunan will use this event as a link to continuously build long-term platforms for enterprise exchanges, technical seminars, and supply-demand matchmaking, coordinate and resolve practical challenges such as qualification interoperability and factor guarantees in cross-regional cooperation, and transform the complementary industrial advantages of the two regions into tangible orders, projects, and output value.
Wang Qiong, a member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the Hubei Provincial Department of Economy and Information Technology, also emphasized that high-quality development in manufacturing relies on open cooperation and mutual promotion. Hubei will join hands with Hunan, focusing on the broader context of building the Yangtze River Midstream Urban Agglomeration, to further deepen cooperation in the engineering machinery industry chain and supply chain, making new and greater contributions to the rise of Central China and the building of a manufacturing powerhouse.
The on-site exchanges and signings represent a proactive response to the cross-regional collaborative development framework. Nine benchmark enterprises from both provinces released supply and demand information. Leading Hunan enterprises presented large procurement demands for chassis, transmissions, and bodies, while Hubei supporting enterprises showcased mature capacities in precision forging and special modifications. The precise matching between supply and demand sides generated numerous cooperative intentions.
Industry associations and multiple leading enterprises concentrated on signing strategic cooperation agreements. The Suizhou Automotive Industry Association and the Changsha Engineering Machinery Industry Association signed a long-term cooperation agreement, establishing a regular industrial对接机制 between the two provinces. Six leading complete machine manufacturers from Hunan, including Sany Group, Zoomlion, and Sunward Intelligent, signed industrial chain cooperation agreements with nine Hubei supporting enterprises such as Sanhuan Axle, Qixing Group, Chengli Group, and Sanjiang Aerospace Wanshan. The cooperation scope covers the entire chain, including complete machine supporting, special chassis, precision components, emergency equipment modification, and intelligent equipment collaboration, achieving deep integration between complete machine manufacturing and local supporting capacity.
During the on-site industry exchange session, the organizing committee of the Changsha International Construction Equipment Exhibition also promoted the upcoming 2027 Fifth Changsha International Construction Equipment Exhibition, a global event for the industry.
