ECB's Kazaks Signals Readiness to Tackle 'Uncomfortable' Inflation Levels

European Central Bank Governing Council member Martins Kazaks has indicated the institution is fully prepared to act decisively if additional measures become necessary to guide inflation back toward its target from its current "somewhat uncomfortable" trajectory.

The Latvian central bank governor noted that while consumer price growth is hovering near the 3% threshold, it remains premature to draw firm conclusions about next month's policy meeting. Market participants have largely priced in a 25-basis-point hike to the deposit rate at that gathering, which would mark the second consecutive increase following June's move.

"We stand fully prepared to bring inflation back to 2% within a reasonable timeframe if required," Kazaks stated in an interview. "We reconvene in September, where we will assess incoming data and the broader outlook before reaching a decision. Given the current circumstances, there are arguments both for and against further tightening."

Expectations for additional monetary policy restraint are not solely anchored in elevated inflation figures. They also reflect the surprising resilience of the euro area economy, which has held up well despite the turbulence and uncertainty stemming from the conflict in Iran.

"The euro zone has proven somewhat more robust than we had anticipated," Kazaks remarked. "Second-quarter growth was fairly solid, and unemployment remains subdued." He added that wage momentum is gradually cooling, noting, "The encouraging aspect is that inflation expectations remain anchored near our target, signalling that markets trust the ECB to follow through on its commitments."

Despite these observations, Kazaks remained tight-lipped about future steps, cautioning that making projections in such a rapidly shifting environment would be unwise. "With uncertainty exceptionally high and rates above the effective lower bound, providing forward guidance would prove counterproductive," he concluded.
