GAC Executive Warns Against Using Consumers as Test Subjects for Autonomous Driving

Deep News06-12

At the 2026 China Automotive Chongqing Forum, held from June 12th to 13th, GAC GROUP's Executive Committee member Wu Jian shared his perspectives. He emphasized that while companies must allow room for trial and error in technological innovation, they must implement absolute error-proofing in product manufacturing and safety. Furthermore, he noted that Chinese automakers should move away from operating independently in complex overseas markets and instead adopt a systematic, ecosystem-based approach to "go global collectively."

Balancing Innovation with Long-Term Vision

Addressing the relationship between innovation and a long-term philosophy, Wu Jian pointed out that these concepts require a dialectical approach. At the level of technological research and development, companies must possess a spirit of experimentation and establish corresponding systems to tolerate failures. Allowing for trial and error is essential for achieving breakthrough innovations from scratch. However, when it comes to product delivery, automakers must create highly safe and durable vehicles.

He stressed, "We cannot hand over autonomous driving technology to consumers and have them conduct experiments for us; that is profoundly mistaken." He expressed that the practice of some companies using customers as test subjects is unacceptable. To truly practice a long-term philosophy, it is imperative to employ rigorous error-prevention systems throughout product development and the market launch process to control quality and resolutely uphold the bottom line of safety.
