In Xianju County, Zhejiang Province, "micro-classrooms" for national defense education are being established to bring the subject closer to the public. During early summer, at the convenience service center hall in Baita Town, student Lin Xiaoya stood on tiptoe, proudly introducing her brother to her classmates as she pointed to a video on the large electronic screen showing new recruits being sent off. The screen continuously displays scenes of new soldiers enlisting and military personnel training for combat readiness, gaining increasing popularity among locals who affectionately refer to it as the "National Defense Honor Showcase."
Such "micro-renovations" are quietly taking place in various locations across Xianju County. Addressing the relatively limited forms of national defense education in this mountainous county, the local People's Armed Forces Department has skillfully utilized existing public resources to create embedded "micro-classrooms" for national defense education tailored to local conditions. Township government electronic screens have become windows for national defense education promotion, village cultural halls now feature walls dedicated to red revolutionary stories, and park pavilions have been transformed into mobile national defense lecture halls.
It has been observed that many village road signs now include introductions to heroic deeds. "My grandson used to pass by these signs without a second glance, but now he asks me about the heroes' stories every day," said an elderly resident from Wenquan Village, Dazhan Township, expressing his delight at the change in his grandchild.
On a summer evening, villagers in Xinluo Village, Hengxi Town, gathered at the village cultural hall to watch a movie, but many were drawn to the newly installed red story wall. They paused to browse, occasionally exchanging quiet remarks. The red story wall primarily focuses on the history of the Red Thirteenth Army, showcasing important figures and their struggles during Xianju's revolutionary period through images, historical materials, and artifacts.
Meanwhile, in the roadside leisure pavilion of Siqianwan Village, Guanlu Town, villagers gathered to listen to stories about the Red Army's guerrilla battles in Xianju. "Currently, there are over 30 national defense education 'micro-classrooms' across the county. We have linked these classrooms together to form multiple immersive study routes, organizing students from various schools in batches each month for study tours," explained a leader from the local People's Armed Forces Department. Since the beginning of this year, these study routes have attracted nearly 20,000 visits from primary and secondary school teachers and students, government officials, employees of enterprises and institutions, as well as ordinary citizens.
