At the 2026 Beijing International Auto Show, XPeng Group Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng shared his views on autonomous driving levels during a media exchange.

He stated that L2, L3, and L4 are technical classifications rather than commercial tiers. Directly translating these technical distinctions into engineering implementations and commercial applications presents significant challenges.

He emphasized that the core objective of intelligent driving assistance is to make travel safer and more convenient. L2 represents assisted driving, while L4 signifies fully driverless technology, with no genuine intermediate state between them. L3 essentially remains an advanced form of assistance, still falling within the "assistive" category. From technical, safety, and regulatory perspectives, the global industry is demonstrating a trend of jumping directly from L2 to L4. However, determining when L4 autonomy can be achieved will require further deliberation among industry professionals.
