Anthropic is facing a classic crossroads for growth-stage technology firms: how to scale its operations without compromising the core principles that set it apart.
The AI company has consistently prioritized safety as a central tenet. It actively advocates for AI regulation and has called for protections for workers as AI begins to displace some human jobs. Anthropic has worked diligently to send a clear message to clients: it aims to be the "good actor" in the industry.
However, the self-imposed safety guardrails that helped build this brand identity may now be hindering its growth.
This week, the Pentagon issued an ultimatum to Anthropic: either relax its AI ethics restrictions or risk losing a $2 billion contract and potential blacklisting. In the same week, Anthropic eased some of its core safety policies to gain more flexibility in a highly competitive and rapidly evolving market.
It remains unclear how these recent developments will impact Anthropic's business and reputation, but each decision the company makes is likely to have significant long-term consequences.
This scenario is familiar in the tech industry. Many companies loudly promote their values and ethical standards, only to eventually confront a difficult choice between growth and staying true to their ideals.
Anthropic would be wise to learn from similar precedents.
**OpenAI's Leadership Turmoil**
Just over two years ago, Anthropic's primary competitor experienced internal conflict over prioritizing growth at the potential expense of safety.
In one of the most unusual corporate boardroom dramas, OpenAI, Anthropic's main rival, abruptly fired its founder and CEO Sam Altman on a Friday in November 2023, only to rehire him the following Tuesday.
The upheaval stemmed from OpenAI's unique corporate structure: the rapidly growing for-profit company behind ChatGPT was governed by a nonprofit board. The board's charter, written four years prior, stated that OpenAI remained "worried" about the potential for AI to cause "rapid change" to humanity. Some board members feared that Altman was moving too fast, potentially jeopardizing the company's safety commitments.
However, Altman's dismissal triggered threats of mass resignations from employees—a situation that, if prolonged, could have led to the company's collapse. Consequently, the board reinstated Altman within days. The board was later dissolved, and Altman subsequently restructured the company to free it from nonprofit oversight.
Since then, OpenAI has navigated a challenging path, balancing rapid development with safety concerns. It also faces lawsuits alleging its products encouraged self-harm among young users, which OpenAI denies.
**Apple and the San Bernardino Shooting**
In December 2015, Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik killed 14 people at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California. The couple was later killed in a shootout with police.
Investigators were granted permission to extract data from Farook's iPhone but were unable to access it due to the device's passcode. A California judge ordered Apple to assist law enforcement in unlocking the phone.
In a public letter signed by CEO Tim Cook, Apple refused the order. Cook argued that complying would create a "backdoor" for the iPhone, which the company believed was "too dangerous to create." Apple stated it had no sympathy for terrorists but asserted that obeying the order would grant the government the power to "access the data of any individual's device."
The decision drew sharp criticism, including from then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. However, Apple later earned widespread praise for defending user privacy, which has since become a cornerstone of its brand identity.
Today, Apple frequently highlights that it does not sell user data or store certain types of personal information on its servers, differentiating itself from major competitors like Google.
**Etsy's Evolution and Independent Sellers**
In the early 2000s, as Amazon's e-commerce empire was rising, Etsy emerged as a novel alternative where consumers could find unique, handmade goods.
However, in 2013, Etsy made a controversial decision that challenged this brand identity. It relaxed its policies to allow sellers to use manufacturers and outsource operations. This raised concerns that it would no longer provide a level playing field for small, independent sellers who lacked the resources to hire employees.
Yet, this move proved crucial to Etsy's evolution into the marketplace it is today. The platform now hosts over 100 million active listings and approximately 8 million active sellers.
According to Arun Sundararajan, a professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, the decision was commercially successful for Etsy, though it represented a challenging period for the company.
**The Path Forward for Anthropic**
These cases offer a cautionary roadmap for Anthropic.
In the short term, the most significant impact on Anthropic may be how clients and potential partners perceive the company's values and trustworthiness, according to Owen Daniels, Deputy Director of Analysis at Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
Anthropic has stated that its self-imposed safety measures were designed to be flexible and adapt as AI technology evolves. The company has committed to transparency on safety matters moving forward, arguing it has little choice: if it stops growing, less safety-conscious competitors could gain an advantage, ultimately making the overall AI landscape "less safe."
Sundararajan noted that the outcome of Anthropic's policy adjustments remains uncertain, as the existential risks of AI are still largely theoretical.
He expressed skepticism toward any expert claiming this is a pivotal moment for AI safety globally. For Anthropic, however, it may indeed be a critical juncture.
"In my view, Anthropic rolling back a safety commitment here says more about Anthropic itself than about the future of AI," he said.
