Second Unit of CGN's Guangdong Taipingling Nuclear Power Project Begins Commercial Operation

The second unit of the CGN Guangdong Taipingling Nuclear Power Project officially commenced power generation at 11:18 AM on August 3, marking the full completion and operation of the first phase of the first "Hualong One" independent third-generation nuclear power project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Located in Huidong County, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, the first phase of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Project received national approval on April 8, 2019. Construction of the project's second unit began on October 15, 2020. The construction team fully leveraged the experience gained from earlier "Hualong One" projects, successfully completing a series of major engineering milestones, including the main structure of the nuclear island, equipment installation and commissioning, nuclear fuel loading, first criticality of the reactor, and grid connection. The quality, safety standards, and construction efficiency of the project have steadily improved.

During the construction of the second unit, the project team continuously advanced the deep integration of construction technology with digitalization and intelligence. On the construction side, over 30 major design improvements were implemented, including the innovative application of integral hoisting technology for the steel liner bottom plate and frustum module for the first time in a "Hualong One" unit. This modular construction approach for the steel liner transferred a significant amount of high-altitude work to the ground, substantially reducing risks associated with cross-operations and work at height.

On the digitalization and intelligence front, the project has implemented over 40 rapid-win scenarios, more than 60 digital and intelligent applications, and over 40 "digital employees" for the Huizhou Company. Deployments include smart construction site 3.0, a digital command center, and intelligent equipment like exoskeleton robots. Notably, "digital employees" achieve second-level data extraction from systems, with business accuracy exceeding 99% and saving over 1,500 working hours annually. Furthermore, an RPA intelligent spare parts coding robot saves approximately 10 million RMB in labor costs each year and reduces redundant spare parts costs by nearly 48 million RMB. These innovations provide strong support for lean management and intelligent construction in nuclear power engineering.

Zhang Guoqiang, Party Secretary and Chairman of the CGN Huizhou Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., stated that with the second unit now officially meeting conditions for commercial operation, the first phase of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Project is fully complete. Based on the average utilization hours of domestic nuclear power in 2025, the two units are expected to generate over 18 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This output can meet the production and living electricity needs of nearly 2 million people for a year, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 16.63 million tons annually. This will further enhance the capacity for clean energy supply in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
