Bruce Richards, Chief Executive Officer of Marathon Asset Management, stated in a recent interview that the U.S. Federal Reserve should allow the economy to run "a little hotter" as long as price pressures stay under control. He highlighted that productivity gains are beginning to emerge, evidenced by robust corporate earnings, with revenue climbing 9% and profits surging 30%.
"I like the current state of the U.S. economy," Richards said. "I think we should let the economy run a bit hot, and as long as inflation is well contained, this will be beneficial globally." He identified energy prices as the sole component of inflation not yet effectively managed, noting that interest rates are unlikely to have significant influence over this factor.
Richards suggested that a modest rate hike could be appropriate to signal the central bank's commitment to fighting inflation. However, he cautioned against aggressive tightening that could genuinely slow economic momentum, describing such a move as a substantial misstep for any central bank.
