Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that Russian forces launched overnight strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, cutting power to at least 600,000 people across Kyiv Oblast and Kharkiv Oblast.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy stated: "Twenty-six facilities in the power system and four facilities in the oil and gas sector were severely damaged." He pointed out that the ballistic missile precision strikes specifically targeted energy infrastructure, even though President Trump had just announced an "energy ceasefire" arrangement on Sunday that was supposed to protect such facilities from attack.
Zelenskyy said: "This attack was entirely deliberate, and its scale carried a demonstrative character. Russia has never before shown such open contempt for the United States."
The strikes came after Zelenskyy accused Russia on Monday of violating a proposal put forward by Trump. The proposal called on both Russia and Ukraine to stop attacking each other's energy facilities in order to push down oil and diesel prices.
Officials from both Russia and Ukraine initially said they were unaware of the existence of this energy ceasefire agreement. Ukraine subsequently expressed welcome for the arrangement; Russia said relevant negotiations were still ongoing but did not confirm that the two sides had reached an agreement.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday: "As for the status of this agreement, one can refer to Zelenskyy's own statements. When asked about it, he said he had not heard of the agreement, hoped to receive clarification, and was willing to accept a ceasefire."
