Indonesia's Central Bank Governor Perry Warjiyo Unexpectedly Steps Down

Deep News07-27

In a sudden shakeup on Monday, Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo resigned from his post, a move analysts warn could unsettle investors and raise concerns about the central bank's independence and the nation's fiscal discipline.

Cabinet Secretary Prasetyo Hadi announced the resignation during a morning press conference before Jakarta's financial markets opened, stating President Prabowo Subianto had approved Warjiyo's resignation. Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti has been appointed as the interim governor. Destry stated that Warjiyo resigned for personal reasons.

The Indonesian rupiah briefly weakened by 0.14% in early trading, falling to 17,960 per US dollar. The main stock index initially dropped as much as 0.68% before reversing course, climbing 0.26% by 02:09 GMT.

"Warjiyo was a steady hand with an impressive track record, so the market will likely interpret his departure negatively," said Angus Mackintosh, ASEAN research expert at Singapore's True Knowledge Capital. "The next steps depend heavily on who is appointed. For now, Senior Deputy Governor Destry is in charge. If the position ultimately goes to Deputy Governor Thomas Djiwandono, who is Prabowo's nephew, the market will be full of doubt. This is a key technical role, and Bank Indonesia must maintain its independence."

Prasetyo revealed that Warjiyo had submitted a resignation letter to the president but did not elaborate on the specific personal reasons. Reuters was unable to reach Warjiyo for comment. Warjiyo first became governor in 2018 and was reappointed in 2023 for a second five-year term.

Bank Indonesia has been under pressure to align with President Prabowo's ambitious economic growth agenda. The rupiah hit historic lows in June, pressured by global market volatility and doubts over Indonesia's fiscal management and central bank independence. Last month, parliament passed a sweeping bill strengthening the central bank's role in supporting economic growth while also granting lawmakers the authority to issue binding recommendations to the independent financial regulator and the central bank.

Following the resignation announcement, Destry told the media that Bank Indonesia would always ensure the continuity of its authority and operations, stabilize the rupiah and the financial system, and foster an environment conducive to economic growth. She stated that the bank's future operations would continue to adhere to best industry practices.

Last week, Bank Indonesia surprised the market by holding its policy rate steady, instead introducing new incentives to attract foreign capital and support the rupiah. The central bank has cumulatively raised interest rates by 100 basis points since May to attract foreign funds and prop up the currency.

"This personnel change will be a core focus for financial markets," Mirae Asset Securities wrote in a research note. "Investors are waiting for the government to finalize the new governor's appointment to assess the impact on the continuity of Indonesia's monetary policy, institutional credibility, and overall policy direction."

The shakeup echoes the market turmoil last year when influential Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati was suddenly dismissed. Investors fear that Prabowo's populist and costly spending plans could damage Indonesia's fiscal credibility.
