U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent on Wednesday once again dismissed reports expressing concerns about National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett's qualifications as a potential Federal Reserve chair candidate.
Speaking at an event, Bessent stated, "Any concerns about Director Hassett are absurd."
"He is a highly credentialed Ph.D. economist with his own perspectives," Bessent said. "He would make an excellent Fed chair, just like anyone else."
Insiders revealed that some senior figures influential with U.S. President Trump oppose Hassett's potential appointment as Fed chair.
When asked about Trump's late-November remark that he had already decided on a candidate but was still conducting interviews, Bessent responded, "Perhaps he meant—maybe I’m the one he chose, but I can’t be in two places at once."
