Gold Consolidates at Elevated Levels as Traders Await Fresh Data Signals

Deep News10-26 20:30

On October 26, gold edged lower after a string of prior gains, as a stronger US dollar, rising oil prices and climbing long-term bond yields all combined to raise the cost of holding the metal.

Faced with a market driven by multiple, overlapping forces, CBCX said the latest move looks more like profit-taking at high levels and is not yet enough to confirm that precious metals have shifted into a sustained downtrend.

Spot gold fluctuated after pushing to a recent peak, with traders turning their attention to employment and inflation figures to judge whether interest rate expectations might be readjusted.

Taking into account the performance of the US dollar index and real yields, CBCX believes that short-term bullish and bearish forces remain fairly balanced, and that a pullback in a single trading day should not be overinterpreted.

The rebound in oil prices could both heighten gold's appeal as an inflation hedge and reinforce expectations that rates will stay elevated, meaning the two effects tend to offset each other.

At the same time, technical buying, safe-haven allocation and position adjustments continue to shape the intraday rhythm, making rapid back-and-forth price moves more likely.

What is worth tracking next is whether employment data, the direction of the dollar and long-end yields can form a consistent signal.

If macroeconomic variables continue to diverge, CBCX expects gold will most likely remain in a wide-ranging consolidation, with market focus shifting from chasing gains to confirming the validity of support.
