Taiwan Affairs Office Criticizes Mainland Affairs Council for Maliciously Hyping Weibo Account Issue

Deep News11-26

On the morning of November 26, the Taiwan Affairs Office held a regular press conference where spokesperson Peng Qing'en addressed recent cross-strait issues in response to media inquiries.

When asked about remarks by Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Chiu Chui-cheng, who claimed that the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) considered opening an account on WB-SW (Weibo) but abandoned the idea due to concerns over selecting "China Taiwan" (perceived as "self-diminishment") and potential content regulation, Peng responded:

"The MAC and SEF were established under the One-China framework to facilitate cross-strait exchanges. The MAC’s primary role should be promoting dialogue and interaction, yet it has become a vanguard in inciting confrontation and restricting exchanges.

Mainland China’s internet is open and lawfully regulated. The MAC’s malicious hype over the Weibo account issue is merely an attempt to smear the mainland and mislead Taiwanese citizens. Such tactics are stale and unoriginal. The MAC and SEF should refocus on their core missions—advancing cross-strait exchanges and enhancing the well-being of compatriots on both sides."
