Alphabet Inc.'s revenue fell short of analyst expectations, and the market reaction was fierce, with shares plunging as much as 10% after hours. The disappointing results reflect growing market concerns about the company's continued commitment of hundreds of billions of dollars to build AI infrastructure.
The market's reaction to Microsoft's earnings formed a sharp contrast: as long as companies can demonstrate that their related investments have generated returns, trading capital will still respond positively. Microsoft reported better-than-expected cloud business revenue, with closely watched Azure sales growing 48%.
In addition, tech analyst Luke Lango noted that Microsoft "achieved this result while keeping capital expenditure below the level the market feared: capex came in at $45.2 billion versus market expectations of $45.9 billion. This is the exact opposite of the reason Meta was sold off last week."
The deeper message from this earnings season is becoming increasingly clear: it is not just bond investors. The stock market is also uneasy about the current scale of spending by major cloud providers. At least in the AI space, the peak in capital expenditure may have already arrived.
