The curtain is falling on another veteran game live streaming platform. Recently, NetEase's game entertainment live streaming platform, CC Live, officially announced its shutdown. Due to adjustments in product development and operational strategy, the platform will terminate operations on August 31st.
The announcement has triggered a chain reaction. Some users have reported investing tens of thousands of yuan to obtain live streaming privileges for in-game items, only to see those privileges vanish with the platform's closure, with no compensation offered by NetEase.
Furthermore, the platform's core user base is fragmenting. Just one day before the shutdown announcement, a top streamer for the game "Fantasy Westward Journey," known as "Old Wang," was confirmed to have signed with a new company and will be moving his broadcasts to Douyin.
The fate of the CC Live team is also a point of concern. A former employee revealed that the team has already undergone a round of layoffs in recent years, with many key personnel and veterans having left. The platform's decline is attributed to its long-term reliance on NetEase's own games, failure to compete effectively in the broader market, and repeated regulatory issues.
Countdown to Shutdown: User Complaints and Staff Uncertainty
Following the announcement, CC Live entered a two-month transition period. The platform will stop downloads, new registrations, and top-ups on June 30th, with servers going offline on August 31st.
User complaints are mounting. The official plan states that virtual currency purchased with real money will be converted into NetEase Points for use in other NetEase games. However, users who spent heavily for exclusive in-game perks tied to CC Live streams feel their investments are now worthless. One user, who spent tens of thousands for monthly equipment in "Naraka: Bladepoint," reported that item distribution became irregular and that customer service offered no refund or compensation solution.
The shutdown also disrupts NetEase's closed直播 ecosystem. The departure of top streamer "Old Wang" to Douyin signifies a major loss. Industry sources note that while exclusive contracts typically prevent such moves, a platform shutdown nullifies these agreements, allowing streamers to leave without penalty, receiving only their accrued earnings.
Regarding staff安置, NetEase has not provided an official response. A former employee indicated that the CC Live team, once numbering in the hundreds, was part of NetEase's Interactive Entertainment division and had already been downsized significantly in a prior round of cuts.
Reasons Behind the Demise
CC Live originated from NetEase CC Voice, launched in 2009 as a voice chat tool for games like "Fantasy Westward Journey." It was upgraded to a live streaming platform around 2016 during the mobile直播 boom. Its peak came with the massive success of the game "Onmyoji" in late 2016, which boosted its user base to reported highs of 280 million registered users and 45 million monthly active users.
However, its dependence on NetEase's flagship games ultimately limited its growth and commercialization. A former employee described it as a "high-risk, high-cost burden," citing expenses like streamer revenue sharing, bandwidth, and servers, alongside significant compliance risks. The platform faced multiple regulatory reprimands between 2020 and 2023 for hosting lowbrow and borderline content.
Externally, the competitive landscape shifted dramatically with the rise of Douyin, Kuaishou, and Bilibili in game直播, putting even established leaders like Huya and Douyu under pressure. "The shutdown was inevitable," the former employee stated. "CC直播 lived in a greenhouse, reliant on NetEase's own games, and never faced direct market competition. Being淘汰 was only a matter of time."
Part of a Broader Strategic Contraction
The closure of CC Live is not an isolated event but part of NetEase's broader strategy to streamline non-core operations. As China's game industry matures, facing saturated user growth and stricter regulation, major publishers are focusing on core strengths.
This contraction is particularly evident overseas. In the past year, NetEase has shut down at least eight overseas game studios, including initiatives in Japan and the US, as these ventures struggled with localization, intense competition, and poor returns on investment.
Internally, NetEase has been optimizing its organizational structure and workforce. Employee headcount decreased from 31,119 at the end of 2022 to 25,382 by the end of 2025, a reduction of 5,737 over three years.
The results of this strategic focus are visible in the latest financials. For Q1 2026, NetEase reported net revenues of 30.6 billion yuan, up 6.1% year-over-year, surpassing 30 billion for the first time. Game and related value-added service revenues grew 6.9% to 25.7 billion yuan, solidifying their core role. In contrast, net revenues from innovative and other businesses fell 4.6% to 1.5 billion yuan, highlighting the pullback from peripheral activities.
This optimization has significantly improved profitability. Gross profit for Q1 2026 jumped 14.8% to 21.2 billion yuan, outpacing revenue growth. This was driven by a higher proportion of revenue from high-margin self-developed games and reduced costs from inefficient platform sharing and边缘 business operations. Operating costs for the quarter were 9.4 billion yuan, down from 10.3 billion a year ago.
The end of CC Live marks the conclusion of an era. For NetEase, it represents a calculated step in a prolonged strategic shift. In the current phase of the internet industry, this focus on core competencies through收缩 and streamlining is becoming a common choice for an increasing number of companies.
