It was a day of market swings, as the Federal Reserve finally delivered its much-anticipated rate cut. The A-share market was choppy, with all three major indices closing in the red, albeit by a modest margin. Let's dive into what unfolded on September 17.
Tuesday's trading session painted a completely different picture compared to the day before. Capital rotated rapidly, with markets rallying in the morning but then giving back gains in the afternoon, leaving the major indices with slight losses. The Shanghai Composite Index declined 0.41%, the Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.33%, and the ChiNext Index shed 0.4%. Despite the downbeat close, 2,576 stocks advanced with 49 hitting the daily limit up, while 2,820 stocks declined.
Capital flows concentrated on three main themes. First, agriculture stocks rallied against the market trend, with Dunhuang Seed, Wanxiang Denong, and Jinjian Rice all hitting their intraday highs. Second, auto-related sectors showed strength, as Zotye Automobile and Ankai Bus surged to their daily limits. Third, innovative drug and CRO concept stocks attracted attention, with Jinshi Yayao and Baihua Pharma climbing to daily limit status.
On the downside, precious metals sectors underwent adjustment, with Shandong Gold and Hunan Gold both sliding more than 6%. On the previous day's outperformers, such as CPO, optical modules, PCB, semiconductor materials, and computing hardware concepts, experienced some cooling off. MLCC concept stocks led the declines in this space.
Amid the day's movements, a rather peculiar event captured the market's attention. Hong Kong-listed JIUMAOJIU, the restaurant chain operator, saw its stock price fall to exactly HK$0.99, matching the company's namesake meaning. At its peak in early 2021, the stock had traded above HK$30.
Public filings show that JIUMAOJIU is a Chinese restaurant chain operator. While investors may not be intimately familiar with the company's flagship brand, they are very likely to have encountered its most prominent concept — Tai Er Sauerkraut Fish. The company listed in Hong Kong in 2020 and currently operates a group of roughly 600 restaurants, with its portfolio mainly including brands such as Jiumaojiu, Tai Er, and Cong Hotpot.
According to previous financial statements, for the first half of the year, the group generated revenue of 2.391 billion yuan, a year-on-year decline of 13.2%. While net profit attributable to the group grew 33.2% year-on-year, core operating profit actually fell from 98.14 million yuan in the previous year's corresponding period to 79.11 million yuan, marking a decline of approximately 19.4%. During the January-to-June period, Tai Er contributed around 1.798 billion yuan in revenue, accounting for 75.2% of the group's total income.
In the first half of this year, the group opened just four new restaurants while closing 42, bringing the total count to 606 by the end of June.
