OpenAI's AI agent products have experienced rapid user growth, surpassing 10 million users shortly after the release of ChatGPT Work, intensifying the market competition with rival Anthropic.
On July 21st, OpenAI announced that the combined user base for its two AI agent products—Codex for programming scenarios and ChatGPT Work for general task handling—has reached 10 million, nearly doubling from earlier in the month.
The launch of ChatGPT Work provided direct momentum for this surge. This product occupies a similar market position to the collaborative tool Cowork, previously launched by Anthropic, indicating a rapidly evolving competitive landscape in the AI agent sector.
The AI Agent Frontier
AI agents are regarded by the industry as the next core product evolution following basic chatbots.
Unlike traditional conversational AI, agent products can autonomously handle more complex, multi-step tasks, significantly lowering the operational barrier for users.
OpenAI's expansion into the agent business is built upon its vast existing user ecosystem. Since its launch in late 2022, ChatGPT has amassed over 900 million weekly active users, providing a natural traffic funnel for promoting agent-based products.
In comparison, the current 10 million agent user base still represents only a tiny fraction of ChatGPT's overall user foundation, suggesting ample room for internal conversion remains.
Converting this massive base user pool into paying customers for agent products will be a critical challenge for OpenAI's next phase of commercialization.
