Shandong Embraces Nuclear Heating as Nuclear Plants Evolve into Regional Energy Hubs

Deep News10-25 12:40

For a long time, coal has been the primary source for winter heating in many cities.

In Haiyang, Shandong, however, nuclear-powered heating has already been in operation for seven heating seasons.

The Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant is precisely the starting point of this "warm current."

The livelihood benefits brought by nuclear heating are tangible and real, with heating fees for Haiyang residents dropping from 22 yuan per square meter to 21 yuan per square meter.

At the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, a bright silver pipeline about one meter in diameter carries industrial steam at a temperature of 248 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 1.8 megapascals.

Its heat comes from the secondary loop steam of Units 3 and 4 at the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, and after multiple stages of heat exchange, it is transported more than 20 kilometers through the pipeline to reach the Lianyungang Petrochemical Base.

Overall, nuclear reactors are stable, zero-carbon, and controllable, and their energy can be converted into electricity and steam, and can also be used for heating, hydrogen production, and irradiation production of isotopes, among other applications.

As a result, the service radius of a single nuclear power plant is expanding from the power grid to heating networks, water networks, and hydrogen networks, and from serving the electricity system to serving industry, cities, and people's livelihoods.

It is no longer merely a power source point on the grid, but is increasingly becoming a regional energy hub.
