Sino Biopharmaceutical's Jin Song: ESG Is No Mere Branding Exercise, It Has Become a Key Benchmark in Capital Markets

Special Topic: 2026 Sustainable Global Leaders Conference & the Second Green Industry and Sustainable Consumption Expo. The 2026 Sustainable Global Leaders Conference was held from October 20 to 22 at the Huangpu Expo Park in Shanghai.

Jin Song, Vice President of SBP GROUP (SEHK: 01177), said during the themed forum "Technology Leads the Way, Together We Protect the Planet: Frontier Exploration and Global Action" that SBP GROUP took the lead in the industry in releasing a carbon neutrality roadmap in early 2025, setting carbon peak targets for 2030 and carbon neutrality targets for 2060, extending carbon management goals to upstream and downstream suppliers and channel partners, and driving ESG upgrades across the entire industry chain.

Energy conservation and emission reduction, and the protection of health through medicine, are two issues that are interrelated and mutually supportive for pharmaceutical companies. As chairman of the group's ESG committee, he made clear that ESG is by no means a branding exercise, and has already become an important benchmark in the capital markets.

ESG has become an important evaluation model and tool for the capital markets to measure whether an enterprise has high quality and sustainable development. He explained the value from three aspects: meeting ESG standards is the entry threshold for long-term capital; excellent ESG performance can reduce investment risk, lower financing costs, and extend financing terms; stable valuation facilitates continuous refinancing by listed companies, which in turn feeds back into new drug research and development.

The funds saved will be invested in new drugs urgently needed in clinical practice, process optimization, and benefitting more patients. On the practical level of green supply chains, Jin Song introduced that the group, together with suppliers, redesigned more than 200 drug packaging products, reduced their volume, and adopted recyclable materials, cutting packaging material costs by 20% over three years; at its subsidiaries, it deployed photovoltaic power to replace traditional energy, reducing electricity consumption by 18%.

Every cent saved relates to the accessibility of every drug, and the accessibility of every drug relates to the saving of every life. The cost reduction dividends mainly support centralized procurement drugs, pediatric drugs, and rare disease drugs with stable low-price supply; at the same time, green supply chain capabilities have also become an important competitive advantage for product exports and access to overseas markets.

Jin Song concluded with an outlook: he hopes that in the future pharmaceutical companies can use ESG as an important soft power lever for sustainable corporate development, promoting every unit of the entire pharmaceutical industry to effectively fulfill the mission of protecting life and health and promoting drug accessibility and availability.
