Japan's Trade Deficit Widens Unexpectedly in June as Weak Yen and Iran Conflict Boost Import Costs

Deep News08:22

Japan's trade deficit experienced an unexpected increase in June, driven by a weaker yen that inflated import costs and heightened oil prices due to the conflict in Iran.

Figures released by the country's finance ministry on Wednesday revealed that the seasonally unadjusted trade deficit grew to 406.9 billion yen ($2.5 billion) from a revised 391.8 billion yen in May. This result came as a surprise to analysts, who had anticipated a deficit of 120 billion yen.

Imports for the month surged by 25.4% compared to the previous year, while exports increased by 19.3%.
