Enphase Energy Surges Nearly 18% in a Single Day as Goldman Sachs Sees Data Center Transformer Opportunity and Raises Price Target

Enphase Energy (ENPH.US) saw its stock price soar 17.8% on Thursday, reaching a new 52-week high of $63.28. This follows a report from Goldman Sachs discussing solid-state transformer technology and the company's potential to capitalize on this emerging opportunity. Despite the significant rally and new yearly peak, Goldman Sachs maintained its "Buy" rating on Enphase Energy and increased its price target from $51 to $57.

Goldman Sachs analyst Brian Lee highlighted that as modern data centers evolve toward 800V DC architectures, as outlined by NVIDIA's roadmap over the coming years, a significant opportunity for power conversion technology in AI data centers is emerging. Several technology firms have announced plans to introduce advanced transformer technologies to meet future demands for efficiency, reliability, and higher power in AI data centers.

Lee noted that power inverter suppliers are naturally positioned for technological migration into the new field of solid-state transformers. Enphase Energy and SolarEdge (SEDG) have clear plans to launch product prototypes by the end of 2025, aiming to secure a first-mover advantage.

"The roadmap for transitioning to 800V DC architectures indicates that initial deployments could begin as early as 2028, which has already sparked a race for the commercialization of solid-state transformers," Lee stated. Concurrently, traditional industry powerhouses such as ABB (ABBNY), GE Vernova (GEV), and Siemens (SIEGY) are also actively developing corresponding solutions.

However, Lee believes Enphase Energy, with its experience in digital control and modular design from the microinverter segment, is well-positioned to secure a role in this upcoming upgrade of data center power architectures. Lee estimates the total addressable market for solid-state transformers could reach approximately 10 gigawatts by 2030, representing a revenue opportunity of up to $5 billion.

Based on low-end and high-end scenario assumptions, he calculates Enphase Energy's potential revenue from this segment could reach up to $910 million, with an incremental earnings per share impact ranging from $0.21 to $1.75 by 2030. This suggests that even moderate market penetration could establish solid-state transformers as a significant new growth driver for Enphase Energy, complementing its traditional residential energy storage and inverter businesses.

Lee concluded that the current market enthusiasm for investing in AI data center power infrastructure has not yet fully priced in Enphase Energy's transformation potential in the transformer space. He sees room for further valuation improvement in the coming months as product prototypes are unveiled.
