Airbnb is further extending its offerings beyond its core lodging model by introducing private airport pickup services in 125 cities across Asia, Europe, and Latin America, including destinations such as Paris, Bali, and Mexico City. The company continues to build a more integrated travel ecosystem. This service, launched in partnership with UK-based Welcome Pickups, appears directly within the Airbnb app after users book accommodations, allowing them to arrange transportation to their lodging and, in some cases, request a welcome service upon arrival. This expansion may signal Airbnb's ongoing effort to replicate the full-service convenience traditionally offered by hotels while maintaining its asset-light marketplace platform structure.
The launch of this service is part of Airbnb's broader "Services" initiative, which already allows travelers to book additional offerings such as private chefs, massages, fitness classes, and beauty treatments. CEO Brian Chesky has indicated that, in the long term, the "Services" and "Experiences" segments could generate $1 billion or more in annual revenue, though he cautioned that these newer businesses may take several years to become significant drivers for the company. The airport transfer feature also formalizes what was previously an informal arrangement, as some hosts independently offered Welcome Pickups services through external referral links or discounts outside the platform.
Under the new structure, travelers can arrange and modify their trips directly within the Airbnb app without incurring additional Airbnb fees, while Welcome Pickups handles pricing and customer support. Costs are fixed based on factors such as vehicle type and luggage requirements, and users receive driver contact details in advance to coordinate arrangements. Airbnb noted that an earlier pilot program in Europe and Asia resulted in thousands of bookings, suggesting early demand as the company continues to expand its peripheral services. The company is also testing a standalone grocery delivery service in select U.S. markets in partnership with Instacart.
