Elon Musk has stated that owners of the new Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA) Roadster will be able to command the vehicle to perform the stunts Tesla demonstrated at its launch event, with the entire process carried out through fully autonomous driving.
Musk made the remark on Saturday local time while replying to tech blogger Robert Scoble on Platform X, and he also promised to build a circular track at Tesla's Texas headquarters.
Scoble had previously argued that a person sitting inside the Roadster is not truly driving. As he described it, the driver operates a computer, and that computer sends commands to another computer, with steering, braking, and acceleration all accomplished through drive-by-wire systems.
Musk replied: "Exactly. You can instruct the Roadster to autonomously perform any of the stunts demonstrated on stage, because this car will have perception capabilities. Additionally, we will build an extremely challenging circular track at the Texas headquarters (even crazier than a Hot Wheels track), where you can test drive your Roadster."
On October 15 local time, at an event held on the outskirts of Waco, the vehicle drove up a curved ramp until the body was inverted, used cold gas thrusters to lift off, completed a flip, and landed. Musk said at the event that the car "can really inflate itself" to perform stunts whenever the owner needs it. Saturday's reply further clarified that the vehicle can execute these stunts independently.
It is noted that Tesla has already introduced some of the hardware needed to achieve this capability. The Roadster uses steer-by-wire paired with a Y-shaped steering wheel, and the cold gas thrusters on the vehicle rely on electric actuators to make small attitude adjustments in the air. A fan system underneath the body can generate suction, which Tesla claims is strong enough to keep the vehicle in an inverted state.
Musk did not specify when this autonomous stunt feature would launch, how exactly it would work, or what he meant by "perception capabilities." He also did not disclose the scale, specific location, or opening time of the Texas track.
The car is planned to enter production at the Texas Gigafactory in 2027 or 2028, and Tesla has stated that the vehicle has not yet been approved for driving on public roads. A rocket version designed specifically for flight will be sold by invitation only.
In the week prior, Musk had been building hype for the event, having said the demonstration would be very impressive. According to the earnings Q&A preview information, Tesla will release its third-quarter earnings on October 21 local time, and shareholders can submit questions and participate in voting through the Say platform, with the deadline at 4 PM Eastern Time on October 20. Submitting questions about the Roadster's autonomous stunts and the Texas track is a way to quickly obtain detailed information from management.
