Volkswagen's Han Sanchu: Global Firms Must Establish Deep Roots in China to Succeed in the New Energy Era

Deep News04-11

On April 11-12, the Intelligent Electric Vehicle Development High-Level Forum (2026) was held at the Beijing National Convention Center Phase II, focusing on the theme "Advancing the Intelligent, Green, Integrated, and International Development of New Energy Vehicles."

Han Sanchu, Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group (China) and CEO of CARIAD China, stated that the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in the Chinese market exceeded 53% last year. This clearly indicates that the core competitiveness of the Chinese market, along with its product objectives and the pace of core technology development, defines the global rhythm of new energy product and technology advancement.

He emphasized that any international enterprise aiming to achieve genuine competitiveness in the new energy era must establish comprehensive and solid capabilities and products within China.

The Chinese market is not only large in scale but also the most complex and rapidly changing market globally. He outlined several clear development trends:

First, traditional market segmentation is being disrupted. The boundaries between mainstream and luxury segments, which were previously distinct, are increasingly blurring, with products and technologies now competing across price ranges.

Second, Chinese consumers have clearly recognized that intelligent capabilities are a core factor influencing their product choices in the market.

Third, with over 100 automotive brands competing in China, the market is exceptionally fierce.

Overall, the Chinese market presents a landscape characterized by intense competition alongside rapid technological iteration.
