Aviation Stocks Rise Broadly on Lower Fuel Costs and Summer Travel Demand

Stock News14:30

Aviation stocks are experiencing a broad increase in trading today.

CHINA EAST AIR (ASX: 00670) is at HK$3.75, CHINA SOUTH AIR (ASX: 01055) has risen 3.24% to HK$3.5, and AIR CHINA (ASX: 00753) is up 3.05% to HK$4.39.

The gains are supported by a reduction in domestic fuel surcharges, effective from July 5th, to 50/100 yuan for flights under/over 800 kilometers, a decrease of 30/50 yuan from previous levels.

Additionally, international oil prices have retreated to pre-conflict levels following a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran.

The commencement of the summer travel period, as schools begin their holidays, is also a contributing factor.

Analyst Outlook on the Sector

Analysts suggest demand during the peak summer travel season is expected to continue its recovery.

It is projected that airline stock performance may evolve through three distinct phases.

The first phase involves a recovery in market sentiment, driven by easing geopolitical tensions and the subsequent retreat from high oil prices, which alleviates concerns over deteriorating fundamentals due to rising crude costs.

The second phase centers on operational recovery, where a substantive decline in the average price of jet fuel, following a full restoration of supply, genuinely eases cost pressures and boosts capacity utilization.

The final phase is characterized by earnings recovery, where the complete dissipation of crude oil-related disruptions allows airline profit margins to rise, with stock prices once again being driven by improved industry supply-demand dynamics and the release of corporate earnings potential.
