New Record Set in China for Shortest Drilling Cycle at Xinjiang Shale Oil Field

Deep News07-07 19:42

Yesterday, on June 6th, the JHW91-13 well in the Xinjiang Jimsar National Continental Shale Oil Demonstration Zone was successfully completed.

The well achieved a total drilling cycle of just 7.75 days, reaching a measured depth of 5,501 meters and a true vertical depth of 4,031 meters.

This performance sets a new national record for the shortest drilling cycle in shale oil wells of comparable depth within China, bringing drilling efficiency up to the advanced international level for similar shale oil wells.

The shale oil resources in Xinjiang's Jimsar region are a typical example of difficult-to-extract continental shale oil in China.

Challenges include strong reservoir heterogeneity and complex interbedded layers of mudstone, which frequently lead to wellbore instability and downhole sticking during drilling operations.

These issues represent a world-class development challenge, demanding extremely high precision in drilling technology, on-site management, and collaborative problem-solving capabilities.

The efficient completion of the JHW91-13 well signifies a major breakthrough in integrated geological engineering and collaborative efforts between operators and contractors at the Xinjiang Jimsar Shale Oil Demonstration Zone, China's first national-level continental shale oil demonstration area.

This achievement establishes a replicable and scalable practical benchmark for the optimal and rapid drilling of deep shale oil reservoirs within the country.
