Switzerland Greenlights Its First Retail Bitcoin ETF, Set to Debut on SIX in November

Stock News10-23

Switzerland's Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has formally approved the country's first bitcoin exchange-traded fund aimed at retail investors, marking a milestone that allows retail capital to hold the asset directly through a regulated channel.

BIT Asset Management announced that its bitcoin fund ETF (BBIT) is scheduled to begin trading on the Swiss SIX exchange in November, with distribution strictly limited to within Switzerland.

This move breaks the previous situation in which retail investors mainly relied on debt-type products, offering a more transparent way to hold the asset.

Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that most bitcoin-related products currently circulating in the European market are actually exchange-traded products, which are essentially debt instruments, meaning investors bear the issuer's credit default risk.

By contrast, BBIT is classified as a Swiss-style collective investment scheme, and its core advantage lies in an asset segregation mechanism 鈥?the bitcoin assets held by the fund are completely separated from BIT Asset Management's own assets, thereby providing investors with independent protection.

Although the fund is placed in the higher-risk category of "other alternative investment funds," its structure significantly reduces counterparty risk.

Notably, FINMA pointed out that other fund providers have already submitted similar applications, showing strong industry demand for compliant bitcoin exposure.

From the perspective of regulatory evolution, although FINMA has allowed approval of funds investing in diversified cryptocurrency portfolios since 2021, this is the first time the regulator has separately approved a fund investing only in bitcoin, given that bitcoin has a longer trading history and higher trading volume.

At the same time as the approval, FINMA once again emphasized that even when allocating through an approved ETF, bitcoin's extremely high price volatility remains a core risk that investors must face.

This is another key milestone in crypto assets moving toward mainstream adoption in mature jurisdictions, following the full ETF-ization of traditional financial assets.
