OceanBase Seeks Up to 3 Billion Yuan in Funding, Ant Group's Data Arm Accelerates Market Independence

Deep News07-29

On July 29, it was learned that database company OceanBase is in talks with investors for a Series A funding round, currently engaging with several leading investment institutions with a target fundraising scale of approximately 2 billion to 3 billion yuan. This marks the business's first external fundraising move since its inception. The primary intent behind preparing to introduce external capital is to help OceanBase further enhance its independent operational capabilities, while also providing financial and resource support for its strategic expansion into the AI data platform sector.

Based on current financial and operational metrics, OceanBase has achieved a considerable commercial scale. It is reported that OceanBase's annualized revenue for 2026 has exceeded 1.4 billion yuan, with a year-over-year growth rate of approximately 70%. In terms of customer base accumulation, the company currently serves thousands of clients, with its business focus remaining on the Chinese market, encompassing major institutional clients such as Bank of Communications and China Mobile. Concurrently, its overseas expansion efforts have been initiated, extending into markets including Southeast Asia, Japan, India, and Latin America.

OceanBase was founded in 2010, initially designed to meet the internal database management needs of Ant Group Co., Ltd. Over the past decade, this distributed system has consistently supported core transactional environments like payments and finance, having withstood peak traffic surges from numerous "Double 11" events. As the technical architecture has matured, its commercial applications have gradually expanded, now serving multiple industries including finance, telecommunications, transportation, manufacturing, retail, public services, and the internet.

Facing industry technological shifts, OceanBase's current evolution direction is transitioning from a traditional distributed database towards an AI data platform. It has been learned that OceanBase is accelerating the implementation of its AI data strategy. Besides integrating traditional structured data, the company is enhancing its processing capabilities for semi-structured and unstructured data, such as video. The current industry consensus is that as AI applications increasingly enter enterprise production environments, the underlying database management system is evolving into a critical infrastructure connecting enterprise data, AI models, and intelligent agents. Aligning with this technological trend, OceanBase released a new generation of lake-house integrated AI database in June. The product is currently being tested in specific scenarios with dozens of clients, and the company plans to further advance its commercial deployment in the future.

Viewed within a broader structural context, this fundraising plan represents a substantial step towards OceanBase's independent operation and market-oriented development. In 2024, OceanBase made adjustments at the corporate governance level, establishing an independent board of directors and creating a separate employee equity incentive mechanism. Coupled with the recent announcement that Ant International has completed a Series A funding round, these governance changes reveal the management logic underlying Ant Group Co., Ltd.'s business layout. Over the past few years, Ant Group Co., Ltd. has incubated several new businesses around areas such as globalization, AI, and data. These businesses are now progressively establishing more independent governance structures, incentive systems, and financing mechanisms, and are beginning to undergo direct scrutiny from the external market.
