Gansu Province Ranks Among Top in China for Wind and Solar Energy Development Potential

Deep News12-21 08:50

Recent findings from a provincial resource survey reveal that Gansu possesses substantial wind and solar energy potential. The survey, conducted by the Gansu Provincial Energy Bureau with support from specialized agencies, estimates the theoretical wind energy capacity at 1.074 billion kilowatts, with technically exploitable resources reaching 470 million kilowatts. For solar energy, the theoretical potential stands at 11.257 billion kilowatts, with 1.386 billion kilowatts deemed technically feasible. Both wind and solar resources rank among the highest in China.

Accurate resource assessment is crucial for strategic planning and large-scale renewable energy projects. This year, leveraging advanced technologies such as big data, cloud computing, AI, geographic information systems, satellite remote sensing, LiDAR, and numerical modeling, the provincial energy authority completed a 10-month survey. The study integrated existing data, expanded observation networks, conducted detailed simulations, and determined technically viable capacities. The results include high-resolution, county-level wind and solar resource maps with hourly and 1 km spatial resolution, forming a comprehensive database.

The survey provides critical insights for Gansu’s energy infrastructure development, including new power transmission channels and desert-based renewable energy bases. It also identifies regional resource distribution, development priorities, and optimal project locations, offering authoritative guidance for local planning and private-sector investment. This data-driven approach fosters efficient capital allocation and industrial clustering, creating a positive cycle for renewable energy growth.
