Risk Appetite Cools, Pressuring Stocks of Crypto-Holding Firms

Deep News11-28

The latest volatility in the cryptocurrency market is weighing on the share prices of companies holding Bitcoin and other tokens on their balance sheets, raising concerns about stress in this niche but fast-growing sector.

Driven by former U.S. President Donald Trump's crypto-friendly stance and inspired by the remarkable success of Michael Saylor's strategy, the number of publicly traded companies seeking asset appreciation through crypto investments has surged this year.

However, recent concerns over a potential artificial intelligence (AI) bubble and uncertainty around the Federal Reserve's rate-cut trajectory have pressured risk assets. Bitcoin prices have fallen to their lowest level since April this month, dragging down shares of numerous "digital asset treasury" (DAT) firms.

Data from crypto media The Block shows that, as of Friday, at least 15 Bitcoin treasury companies traded below the net asset value of their token holdings.

Standard Chartered analysts noted in a September report that DAT firms hold 4% of all Bitcoin, 3.1% of Ethereum, and 0.8% of Solana, meaning their operations could significantly impact crypto prices. The analysts also predicted industry consolidation.

DAT executives emphasize that their success hinges on making sound investment decisions, with many exploring new revenue streams.

Below is an analysis of select high-profile DAT firms:

**Bitcoin Treasuries** The most common DAT type, Bitcoin treasury stocks have retreated sharply from their 2025 peaks. Michael Saylor's pioneering Bitcoin accumulation strategy spawned dozens of imitators, saturating the market—with related stocks down nearly 36% in November alone.

**Ethereum Strategy** As Bitcoin treasury competition intensifies, newcomers like Bitmine and Sharplink Gaming have diversified into Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies.

These firms saw share price surges when announcing Ethereum accumulation plans earlier this year but now trade well below 2025 highs.

Unlike Bitcoin treasuries relying solely on price appreciation, Ethereum allows "staking"—where holders earn rewards (typically in additional ETH) for securing the blockchain. This provides alternative ETH accumulation methods.

**Solana & Altcoins** Some companies expanded holdings to include "altcoins" like Solana and Ripple's XRP. Smaller firms chasing higher profits have ventured into lower-liquidity, more volatile tokens, amplifying stock price risks.

For instance, ALT5 Sigma launched a treasury strategy specifically accumulating tokens issued by Trump-affiliated crypto venture World Liberty Financial.
