South Korea's benchmark Kospi index slid as much as 6.3% during trading, pressured by a sharp selloff on Wall Street overnight that dragged down semiconductor stocks globally.
The decline was led by heavyweight technology names, with Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and SK Square all tumbling at least 7%, making them the biggest drags on the index.
The losses in U.S. chip stocks on Tuesday came as bond yields remained elevated, fueled by persistent inflation concerns and a rising government debt load, which spooked investors across risk assets.
Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Kosdaq small-cap index also fell more than 3%, reflecting broad-based weakness across the South Korean market.
