According to Woofun AI, Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings officially announced on November 3 that it will inject $100 million into Erebor Bank, a US digital bank headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, through its US subsidiary SBI Holdings USA.
The establishment of this strategic partnership marks a new stage in traditional financial institutions' acceptance of crypto-native banking models, with SBI explicitly stating it will use the deal to explore cooperation opportunities with Erebor in stablecoin deposits and withdrawals as well as deeper business areas.
The rise of Erebor Bank is closely tied to its founding team's deep technology background and complex political connections. The bank was co-founded in 2025 by Palmer Luckey, Owen Rapaport, Jacob Hirshman, Aaron Peltz and Trevor Capozza, with its name inspired by the Lonely Mountain in The Hobbit.
Among them, Palmer Luckey is renowned in the industry as the creator of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, the original founder of Oculus VR and the founder of defense technology company Anduril Industries, but he only serves as a strategic advisor on the Erebor Bank board and does not take part in daily operations.
The other co-founders each have their own roles: Owen Rapaport previously founded crypto compliance firm Aer Compliance and now serves as CEO; Jacob Hirshman was formerly an advisor to Circle (CRCL.US) and worked at law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, and now serves as board chairman; Aaron Peltz is chief technology officer; while Trevor Capozza's specific responsibilities have not been publicly disclosed, he is also a co-founder.
It is worth noting that Luckey has long been a major donor to the Republican Party and campaigns associated with Donald Trump. Since 2017, he has donated a cumulative $5.9 million to Republican candidates and related groups, and has hosted Trump-related fundraisers multiple times, including making a large direct contribution to the "Trump 47 Committee."
During the 2026 midterm elections, Luckey's political spending did not diminish. According to analyses by media outlets including LAist, he donated more than $350,000 to over 70 campaign projects during that election cycle, with nearly all the funds going to Republican-related groups, and cumulative donations to relevant Republican committees have surpassed $1 million. He also hosted a "Keep America's Senate" fundraiser tied to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
In October 2026, at an event held at Anduril's new shipyard in Maryland, Donald Trump publicly called Luckey "my friend" and "a truly amazing person," further highlighting the close ties between the two.
In terms of business model, Erebor aims to serve US companies in the "innovation economy," with a core customer base covering defense, robotics, artificial intelligence, hard tech, energy, advanced manufacturing and the cryptocurrency industry. The bank offers deposits, loans, payments and treasury management services, supports stablecoin deposits and withdrawals, and features round-the-clock blockchain settlement.
Unlike trust institutions that only provide custody services, Erebor holds a full commercial bank charter, allowing it to accept deposits insured by the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and issue loans.
According to an October announcement by Robinhood (HOOD.US), Erebor obtained a full national bank charter from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and FDIC insurance eligibility in February 2026. Since then, its deposits have grown rapidly, surpassing $7 billion as of September 2026.
According to a July 2 report by Bloomberg, the bank's deposits rose from $1.1 billion to $4.05 billion over the previous three months, with nearly 400 new clients, and it was expected to become profitable within the year. Sacra estimates that the bank's annualized revenue in July was about $112 million, with its hundreds of capital-intensive clients generating high value per customer. This rapid expansion stems from its unique market positioning and technical capabilities, enabling it to quickly capture market share in areas where traditional banking services are insufficiently covered.
Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that SBI Holdings chose to invest in Erebor because of its long-term positioning in the crypto sector and its emphasis on the value of US dollar channels. SBI Holdings is a diversified Japanese financial group spun off from SoftBank in 1999, with businesses spanning securities, banking, asset management, venture capital and digital assets.
The company has deep experience in the cryptocurrency field: in 2016, it invested in Ripple and co-founded SBI Ripple Asia, also invested in bitFlyer, and launched the licensed exchange SBI VC Trade. In June 2026, it launched Japan's first trust-structured yen stablecoin JPYSC, partnered with Circle to promote USDC in Japan, and worked with Ripple to promote the adoption of RLUSD. In October 2026, it completed the acquisition of Japanese crypto exchange Bitbank.
In addition, SBI has invested in Web3 infrastructure projects including Gauntlet, Morpho and Elliptic. For SBI, Erebor's core value lies in its ability to provide dollar on/off ramps for the US market and stable currency settlement capabilities.
Erebor offers stablecoin deposit and withdrawal services, has independently developed core systems, can conduct blockchain settlement on weekends and outside regular banking hours, and also accepts cryptocurrency as loan collateral. SBI said in its announcement that it will further explore possibilities for cooperation, indicating that the two companies may find common ground in US dollar stablecoin inflows and outflows, cross-border settlement and institutional client services, which could help SBI deepen its penetration into North American crypto financial markets.
Robinhood's entry further pushed up Erebor's market valuation. According to a Robinhood announcement on October 21, Robinhood Ventures Fund I (NYSE: RVI) completed a $30 million purchase of Erebor preferred shares on September 17. RVI is the first fund launched by Robinhood Ventures and listed on the New York Stock Exchange on March 6, 2026.
As a closed-end fund, it mainly invests in a portfolio of private companies and is open to retail investors without requiring qualified investor status or a minimum investment threshold. RVI President Sarah Pinto said in the announcement that there is still significant room for innovation in banking, and Erebor is expected to become the basic financial infrastructure needed to support the US innovation economy.
Earlier, in December 2025, Erebor completed a $350 million financing round at a valuation of $4.35 billion, led by Lux Capital, with participation from Founders Fund, 8VC, Haun Ventures and other institutions. Erebor is currently in talks with investors for a new funding round targeting a valuation of at least $8 billion, nearly double its valuation at the end of 2025.
Its existing investor list also includes other well-known institutions such as a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), showing top venture capital firms' strong recognition of the project. Erebor's technical advantage lies in integrating stablecoins into core banking operations rather than merely providing cryptocurrency custody services.
It supports deposits, withdrawals and settlement for major stablecoins including USDC and USDT, and in April 2026 integrated the Sui network to support stablecoin deposits, withdrawals and related services. The bank holds a small amount of cryptocurrency to pay gas fees and handle wrapped stablecoin-related business, but it does not issue its own stablecoins, focusing instead on deposits, settlement and related services.
However, certain risks have also emerged during operations. Earlier in 2026, Erebor attracted cryptocurrency clients by offering free cash redemption services for stablecoins issued by Circle and Tether, but this policy was exploited by professional trading institutions for arbitrage, causing losses for the bank. Erebor subsequently tightened the terms of the service to prevent further arbitrage risk.
This incident reflects the challenges emerging digital banks face in balancing market expansion and risk control, especially when dealing with high-frequency trading and professional arbitrageurs, where system design and risk control mechanisms still need continuous optimization.
In the competitive landscape, Erebor faces competition from institutions such as Column, Lead Bank and Cross River. Column is a software-focused, API-first nationally chartered US bank whose clients include Mercury, Brex and Ramp.
Lead Bank has developed rapidly in the stablecoin sector, launching USDC on/off ramp services and cross-border payment solutions. Cross River is a long-established bank that has long served fintech companies and crypto companies, with clients including Circle, Coinbase (COIN.US) and Gemini (GEMI.US).
Compared with these competitors, Erebor's advantages lie in having its own national bank charter, FDIC insurance protection, a high-level customer service model, and a focus on innovative technology and cryptocurrency clients, while its disadvantages are its short operating history and early stage of development scale.
According to Bloomberg opinion columnist Paul Davies, Erebor has replicated Silicon Valley Bank's model of focusing on a single highly volatile industry, and therefore faces concentration risk. Senator Elizabeth Warren has also previously expressed concerns about Erebor's rapid charter approval process and its political connections.
Several industry media outlets view the bank's rise as a signal of a recovery in crypto-friendly banking, but also warn of early operational challenges. This is a key case in which regulators and the market are once again examining risk appetite for crypto banking after the Silicon Valley Bank crisis. Whether Erebor can remain stable amid rapid growth will determine whether it can truly become "the next Silicon Valley Bank" or merely a flash in the pan.
