Strategy (MSTR.US) has flashed its first "Golden Cross" since March 2023 — a bullish technical signal that occurs when the 50-day simple moving average crosses above the 200-day moving average.
The last time this pattern appeared, the stock surged nearly 700% over the following 12 months, and this signal could draw momentum traders back to this bitcoin proxy.
However, the technical setup remains fragile at present. Strategy's 50-day moving average sits at $135.67, only slightly above the 200-day moving average of $135.53, while the stock is trading near $137.18.
More importantly, the share price remains below its 20-day moving average of $147.40 — roughly 7.5% above the current price — which represents a significant near-term resistance for any sustained rally.
Momentum indicators offer little confirmation: the RSI (Relative Strength Index) stands at 42.89, below the neutral threshold of 50, while the MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) reads -3.72, remaining in negative territory.
Beyond the Charts: Dual Pressure from Index and Capital Structure
Factors beyond the charts are also clouding the outlook. A potential removal from the MSCI index has raised concerns about selling pressure from passive funds — a headwind that could weigh on the stock regardless of how bitcoin performs.
Strategy's capital structure adds another layer of complexity: the company funds its aggressive bitcoin accumulation through equity issuance and other mechanisms, practices that dilute shareholder equity and affect how much upside ultimately reaches shareholders.
For investors, the Golden Cross represents an encouraging shift in trend structure rather than a guarantee of immediate gains. Until Strategy reclaims its 20-day moving average of $147.40 and shows improving momentum, index risk and the cost of financing its bitcoin strategy both remain reasons for caution.
