Leveraging its big data infrastructure and intelligent scheduling systems, Qingdao Chengyun has achieved precise matching of commuters' travel needs at scale. This approach fundamentally reduces empty vehicle mileage and addresses the long-standing transit pain points of fixed schedules and passengers' waiting at stops with uncertain arrival times.
How exactly does big data transform conventional bus operations? And how does the booking model close the coverage gap for short-distance urban trips? These pressing public concerns prompted field visits to communities and bus stops to investigate the innovative development of Qingdao Chengyun's booking bus service firsthand.
From People Waiting for Buses To Buses Seeking People
At the Hedong Community bus stop, resident Ms. Wu pulled out her phone and opened the "Chengyun e-Life" mini-program, completing her booking order with a few screen taps. After a roughly three-minute wait, a booking bus pulled up at the platform smoothly. She was full of praise for the efficient and convenient experience: "One yuan, scan the code, and you're on board. It saves both time and money and is far more cost-effective than taking a taxi," Ms. Wu said.
In the past, the conventional impression of bus travel was punctuated by long waits, empty buses during off-peak hours, and poor short-distance feeder connections. Now, an AI-driven transportation transformation is underway, with bus services shifting from a model of "people waiting for the bus" to one of "the bus seeking the people." This change is powered by the new "booking bus" model developed by Qingdao Chengyun, which uses big data and intelligent dispatch systems.
On September 24, 2025, Qingdao's inaugural Ding Shi Hua Fu booking bus route was officially launched, covering an area of 3.2 square kilometers with 18 designated booking stops. The route connects seamlessly with the Metro Building Station and major arterial bus lines, breaking down barriers for community commuting and subway transfers. Initially, booking services were only available on workdays. To better align with commuter needs, Qingdao Chengyun dispatched 63 staff and volunteers to conduct on-site promotions, passenger flow surveys, and feedback collection in surrounding residential areas and at the Metro Line 3 station. Combining offline public input with backend big data analytics, the service was extended to weekends and holidays, comprehensively accommodating the fragmented travel patterns of local residents.
When passengers submit booking requests online, the system completes dispatch assignments in seconds, deploying the nearest available vehicle to respond and depart on demand. Operational data shows the route's daily ridership has grown steadily from an initial 10 passengers to 25, with a single-day peak reaching 36 passengers, reflecting growing public acceptance. In the year since its launch, the Ding Shi Hua Fu booking bus has accumulated 22,856 kilometers of operation and served more than 5,900 passengers, with numerous residents along the route adopting booking as a preferred option for everyday commuting and short trips.
Scaling Success With Tailored Booking Models For Diverse Scenarios
Building on the mature operational experience of the Ding Shi Hua Fu route, Qingdao Chengyun has been expanding its booking services since 2026. Adapting to the distinct travel characteristics of areas such as cultural tourism, industrial commuting, and campus-commercial zones, it has launched three additional booking routes: Dong Dayang Cruise Terminal, High-tech Zone Line 1, and High-tech Zone Line 2. These routes utilize two differentiated operational approaches: route-based booking and zone-based booking.
The Dong Dayang Cruise Terminal route adopts the route-based booking model, featuring four stops between Fantawild Dreamland and Dong Dayang Cruise Terminal. It operates with a flexible dispatch policy, departing as soon as five passengers have booked, ensuring convenient mobility for tourists and nearby residents. The two High-tech Zone routes implement a flat fare of just 2 yuan and use the zone-based booking model. High-tech Zone Line 1 covers roughly 2.42 square kilometers, including the Qingdao High-tech Zone Community Health Service Center, Innovation Building, and research institutes. Booking is available only on workdays, matching the tidal commuting patterns of office workers in the industrial parks. This fills the "last mile" gap left by mainline buses, achieving the service target of "5-minute booking, 10-minute pickup, and 15-minute destination arrival." High-tech Zone Line 2 covers approximately 7.31 square kilometers, serving areas from Jinke Sunshine Town and Haidu College to Lanzhou City Mall and Oriental Eden. Within just four days of its launch, the route had already transported 47 booked passengers, signaling growing initial market demand.
Algorithm-Driven Upgrades Unlock Three Levels of Service Evolution
To break down digital barriers in smart mobility and accommodate passengers of all ages, the Ding Shi Hua Fu booking bus service has continuously refined its system by building a multi-channel, barrier-free booking matrix. "Mini-program booking, telephone booking, and driver-assisted ordering are just different ways for passengers to submit their travel needs. The real game-changer is the intelligent dispatch behind it. Orders from any channel all feed into a unified platform for processing," explained Zang Yong, a Qingdao Chengyun staff member. The intelligent dispatch system records real-time operational data, including booking volumes, travel time slots, and pick-up points. By analyzing this information regularly, it identifies recurring travel patterns within the service area, creating a positive feedback loop of "demand collection, intelligent matching, and dynamic adjustment." This provides practical and precise data to guide daily fleet allocation, operating hour optimization, and stop-level service refinement.
From traditional buses to smart booking transit, Qingdao Chengyun is achieving a three-stage service evolution. Stage 1.0 represents the traditional fixed-route bus system where passengers wait for the bus. Stage 2.0 introduces responsive stops, allowing vehicles to stop flexibly based on real-time boarding and alighting requests. Entering the 3.0 stage with booking buses, the dispatch framework becomes far more intelligent, with the system matching the closest available vehicle to real-time demand. Through algorithms, it consolidates scattered travel requests for the same period and direction into efficient, concentrated trips. This approach balances travel efficiency against operational costs, offering a fresh solution for short-distance urban mobility.
With the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays approaching, Qingdao Chengyun will keep its holiday booking bus routes operating normally to support residents' travel for leisure, nearby commuting, and short-distance family visits. Booking channels will remain open, and the intelligent dispatch system will continue running at full capacity, delivering flexible, convenient, and accessible smart transit services to safeguard smooth holiday travel for the public. All residents are welcome to experience this new model of intelligent travel.
