Starting July 1st, a new temporary program under Medicare in the United States has begun covering GLP-1 weight-loss medications, such as those produced by companies like Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. This change opens access for millions of older adults who previously could not afford these treatments. However, awareness of this new benefit is low; a survey from early June indicated that a significant 82% of seniors were unaware that Medicare coverage for these drugs was imminent.
To bridge this critical information gap, major retail chains Wal-Mart and CVS Health are taking proactive steps. Wal-Mart, along with Sam's Club, has launched a nationwide initiative. Through nearly 5,000 stores, they are offering personalized pharmacist consultations, educational materials, and digital health navigation tools to help Medicare beneficiaries understand their insurance options. Kevin Host, Senior Vice President of Walmart Health & Wellness, emphasized that pharmacists are often "the most accessible healthcare professionals," with a broad presence in rural and underserved communities.
Concurrently, CVS Health is expanding its support across its network of approximately 9,000 pharmacies and MinuteClinic locations. Key measures include offering a $50 monthly co-pay option for eligible Medicare beneficiaries and introducing a virtual weight management consultation service priced at $49, facilitating patient assessment and prescription access. CVS Health also intends to set up product display areas in select stores to promote over-the-counter products that can help manage common side effects of GLP-1 drugs, such as nausea.
The efforts by these retail powerhouses are designed to help seniors navigate the complex eligibility requirements and address the long-term adherence challenges associated with GLP-1 medications, where over 50% of patients discontinue use within the first year.
