On July 16th, the nation's first 2,000-ton class hydrogen-powered collection and distribution vessel, the "Yuntao No. 1", was officially launched in Zhaoqing, Guangdong. As the largest hydrogen-powered ship in China, this vessel fills a domestic gap for thousand-ton class, large-capacity hydrogen-powered cargo ships, marking a milestone breakthrough in China's independent development of large-tonnage hydrogen energy shipping equipment for inland waterways.
The "Yuntao No. 1" was jointly developed by Yuntao Hydrogen Energy and China State Shipbuilding Corporation. With an overall length of 70 meters and a beam of 14 meters, it boasts a cruising range of 760 kilometers and can carry approximately 140 containers or bulk cargo such as ore, coal, and grain in a single trip. The vessel is equipped with three 260-kilowatt marine hydrogen fuel cell generator sets, supplemented by lithium battery range extension. It operates with zero carbon emissions, zero noise, and zero pollutant discharge throughout its journey, producing only clean water vapor. For the same route and tonnage, its hydrogen consumption is 1 kilogram per kilometer, with fuel operating costs 25% to 30% lower than traditional diesel-powered vessels, achieving the dual value of carbon reduction and cost savings simultaneously.
Key Technological Innovations
The vessel incorporates three core self-developed technologies. The multi-source power coordination and matching technology balances the 2,000-ton heavy-load capacity with long-range endurance, making it suitable for long-distance bulk cargo transport along the main trunk of the Yangtze River. The comprehensive hydrogen safety protection system covers the entire process of hydrogen monitoring, explosion prevention, and leak emergency response, meeting the stringent safety standards required for complex inland waterway navigation. The multi-waterway intelligent adaptation technology features customized tuning for deep and shallow channels, ship locks, and various docks, significantly broadening its navigational adaptability range.
Industry Consortium Established
Coinciding with the launch, the China Hydrogen Ship Industry Innovation Consortium, led by Yuntao Hydrogen Energy, was officially established on the same day. This is the country's first specialized innovation collaboration platform focused on the hydrogen energy sector for ships. The consortium initially includes nearly 40 companies, covering the entire industry chain from ship design and equipment manufacturing to materials R&D and operational services, achieving a comprehensive integration of the core supply chain for hydrogen-powered vessels. On-site, a letter of intent was also signed for the trial use of the "Yuntao No. 1".
New Product Launches
During the event, Yuntao Hydrogen Energy unveiled new hydrogen energy products across three sectors: waterborne, land, and low-altitude transportation. Yang Qiang, Chairman of Yuntao Hydrogen Energy, stated that the company plans to deploy one hundred standardized hydrogen-powered vessels in the Pearl River within four years and improve the supporting hydrogen refueling infrastructure for water transport. The goal is to achieve sustainable, subsidy-free commercial operation of hydrogen ships by 2028, continuously contributing to low-carbon transportation development through technology and industrial ecosystem development.
