On April 16, Google announced a collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank to advance three AI-related initiatives in Latin America. These initiatives cover policy research, public sector training, and digital infrastructure development, aiming to accelerate the adoption of AI and digital transformation in the region. At the policy and research level, Google released an AI development report for Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. The report indicates that with responsible and systematic AI implementation, the region's GDP could see an increase of 3.6% to 6.7%, with a potential annual economic impact of up to $242 billion. The report also identifies four key pillars for success: talent development, infrastructure building, technological innovation, and the improvement of policy and regulatory frameworks. Secondly, in the area of talent and capacity building, the partners jointly launched an AI training program for government officials. Based on the "ImplementaLAC" platform, which was created through multi-party cooperation, the program offers courses in multiple languages (Spanish, Portuguese, and English), focusing on enhancing the public sector's capabilities in AI application and governance to support more efficient public services. Third, in the digital infrastructure sector, Google, through its philanthropic arm, is committing $5 million to support the global non-profit organization Co-Develop in promoting the development and reuse of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), including digital identity and payment systems. As part of this, the partners will advance a transnational digital identity system named IdLAC, covering 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to enable cross-border identity verification and interoperability of public services. In terms of practical applications, AI is already being deployed in some countries. For instance, in Brazil, customs authorities are using Gemini to automate luggage screening processes. In Mexico, audit institutions have leveraged Google's AI tools to reduce audit cycle times from several months to just minutes.
