Dreame Founder Yu Hao recently discussed the boundaries of his company during an interview, stating, "I am not yet sure where the boundaries lie, but I am certain they are not in manufacturing alone."
When commenting on the views of Meituan founder Wang Xing regarding boundaries and core competencies, Yu Hao remarked, "Wang Xing is exceptionally capable. When the mobile internet era arrived, he proposed the 'four verticals and three horizontals' framework to decide what to pursue and what to avoid." In his view, Wang Xing epitomizes the "Tsinghua methodology," preferring to analyze all issues thoroughly before making decisions. However, Yu Hao suggested that if one strictly adheres to a predefined path without adjustments or exploration beyond the original plan, it may prevent the acquisition of genuinely new insights in practice.
"If I were in his position a few years ago, I would have taken a more proactive approach by challenging Alibaba and ByteDance through cross-category expansion, while also accelerating globalization efforts. Choosing not to attack is acceptable only if others do not attack you," Yu Hao added.
He described himself as an extreme proponent of the "assumption that the world is unknowable." By assuming that "one does not know," he prefers to experiment with various approaches. Traditional methods aim to eliminate uncertainty, but Dreame operates under the assumption that the world is chaotic and ever-changing, making it impossible to eradicate uncertainty. Therefore, the company seeks methods to combine probabilities in ways that yield significantly higher success rates than conventional approaches.
"In today's China, a company capable of managing multiple product categories is inherently stronger than one focused on a single category. Similarly, a globalized company naturally holds an advantage over one confined to a local market," Yu Hao concluded.
