On May 13, Meta Platforms, Inc., the U.S. social media giant, announced it will grant free access to certain tools within its WhatsApp messaging service to competing artificial intelligence chatbots. This move is designed to address compliance pressure from EU antitrust regulators and avoid potential substantial fines.
According to a recent statement from Meta, as part of ongoing discussions with the European Commission, general-purpose AI chatbots operating in the European Economic Area (EEA) will receive one month of free access to the WhatsApp Business API. A Meta spokesperson stated this initiative aims to create space for reaching a "swift and fair" consensus on the investigation's findings.
An EU Commission spokesperson responded that Meta's current announcement is "a step in the right direction," and its practical effect is equivalent to the interim enforcement measures the EU originally planned to implement. The spokesperson emphasized this will provide necessary time for regulators and the company to further discuss potential commitment proposals and alleviate competition concerns.
