Alphabet Shares Experience Sharpest Decline Since February Following Departures of Two AI Leaders

Alphabet's stock experienced a significant drop of up to 5.9% during Monday's trading session, marking its steepest intraday decline since early February and contributing to a broader sell-off among other major technology stocks.

The decline followed the departure of a second prominent AI researcher from the company over the weekend. Google DeepMind's Vice President, John Jumper, announced on Friday that he would be leaving to join the AI firm Anthropic. Jumper is recognized for his contributions to the AI field, having been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

This news came shortly after another high-profile exit last week. Noam Shazeer, one of Google's most notable researchers, also announced his departure to join rival company OpenAI. Shazeer co-authored a seminal research paper that played a pivotal role in catalyzing the current wave of enthusiasm for artificial intelligence.
