Bitcoin Falls Below $80,000 as $1.34 Billion in Long Positions Are Liquidated

Bitcoin's trading price has officially dropped below the key psychological threshold of $80,000, with the direct trigger being the forced liquidation of up to $1.34 billion in long positions.

This sharp price correction did not stem from a sudden change in fundamentals, but rather from a chain liquidation effect triggered by highly leveraged longs during a downtrend, dealing a severe blow to market liquidity in an instant.

Notably, this decline occurred primarily on leading derivatives trading platforms such as OKX, where the concentrated blow-up of leveraged funds became the core driving force pushing prices below $80,000.

From a market microstructure perspective, leverage sentiment across different assets has shown significant divergence.

On the OKX platform, Bitcoin's funding rate remains positive, indicating that some aggressive bulls are still holding positions or new longs are attempting to buy the dip, yet this positive rate can no longer offset the selling pressure brought by large-scale liquidations.

In contrast, Ethereum's funding rate has turned negative, reflecting more pessimistic market sentiment toward that asset, with bearish forces taking the dominant position.

Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that this funding rate divergence reveals differences in hedging and speculative behavior of capital across various crypto assets. While Bitcoin has been impacted, its leverage structure has not yet fully reversed, whereas Ethereum faces more severe deleveraging pressure.

Bitcoin's fall below $80,000 accompanied by massive liquidations marks the market entering a phase of deep deleveraging.

As highly leveraged longs are flushed out, short-term selling pressure may gradually ease, but the restoration of market confidence will still take time.

This is yet another instance, following multiple previous episodes of violent turbulence, in which the crypto market has demonstrated its fragility under high leverage characteristics. Investors need to be wary of potential volatility amplification effects going forward.
