Suizhou has been selected as a member of the Greater Bay Area Hydrogen Energy Comprehensive Application Pilot City Cluster, placing the city firmly within the nation's first tier for hydrogen industry development.
Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission jointly approved the pilot program for the Greater Bay Area Hydrogen Energy Comprehensive Application Pilot City Cluster, with a trial period set for four years. The cluster is led by Guangzhou and brings together 11 cities across five provinces—Guangdong, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, and Hainan—alongside three supporting cities and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for coordinated development. Suizhou's successful inclusion means it will work alongside cities such as Guangzhou and Wuhan to build a world-class demonstration cluster for integrated hydrogen energy synergy.
According to the pilot work plan, the Greater Bay Area cluster aims to promote the adoption of 16,000 fuel cell vehicles, construct 100 new hydrogen refueling stations, and build four major transportation corridors: the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao cross-provincial hydrogen corridor, the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang hydrogen expressway, the Wuhan-Xiangyang-Shiyan hydrogen energy corridor, and the coastal hydrogen economic corridor. These initiatives will establish a nationally benchmarked cross-city scaled fuel cell vehicle application network, develop an internationally leading industrial full-chain hydrogen substitution system, cultivate diverse cutting-edge hydrogen innovation application scenarios, and drive mutual reinforcement between fuel cell vehicle adoption and industrial applications.
Being included in the Greater Bay Area pilot cluster brings significant opportunities for the development of Suizhou's hydrogen industry. As the renowned hub for specialized vehicles in China, Suizhou boasts a solid foundation for growing its hydrogen sector. Capitalizing on its strengths in complete vehicle manufacturing, the city has continued to deepen its layout across the full hydrogen industry chain. In close collaboration with Tsinghua Industrial Development Research Institute, Suizhou has jointly established the Hubei Hydrogen Energy Commercial Vehicle Innovation Demonstration Center, adopting a collaborative model of research and development in Beijing with manufacturing in Suizhou. Over the past three years, the city has developed and launched multiple hydrogen commercial vehicle models, including the H49, H18, and H05, all of which have been well received in the market. The fully self-developed H49 hydrogen heavy-duty truck has achieved revolutionary breakthroughs in core technologies, with performance indicators leading globally across the board. In 2025, Suizhou successfully won the bid for Hubei Province's first full-chain standardization pilot project for the hydrogen industry. Currently, hydrogen-powered logistics vehicles, sanitation trucks, and compression trucks produced in Suizhou are being sold to cities including Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou.
Joining the Greater Bay Area Hydrogen Energy Comprehensive Application Pilot City Cluster marks Suizhou's official entry into the national first tier of the hydrogen industry. During the pilot period, Suizhou has been tasked with promoting the adoption of 595 hydrogen heavy-duty trucks. The city will also work collaboratively with other cluster cities to expand hydrogen applications across transportation, industry, and energy sectors. Joint efforts will focus on developing clean and low-carbon hydrogen sources such as renewable-based hydrogen production and industrial by-product hydrogen, building a comprehensive hydrogen storage and transportation pipeline network, and establishing a stable and diversified hydrogen supply system. The initiative also involves joint research and development of key core technologies and equipment, exploring replicable and scalable commercial operation models, and coordinating the improvement of supporting policies to foster a healthy and sustainable hydrogen industry ecosystem.
"With abundant local wind power resources, Suizhou has distinct advantages for green hydrogen development through on-site production and consumption," said Xu Depeng, Deputy Director of the Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology. "At present, the city is planning 11 key hydrogen projects, fully promoting the implementation of projects across the entire chain of hydrogen production, refueling, and utilization." Moving forward, Suizhou will continue to support enterprise technology upgrades, introduce cutting-edge technologies such as lightweight design and intelligent autonomous driving, and polish the reputation of Suizhou-made hydrogen heavy-duty trucks, contributing to the high-quality development of the province's new energy commercial vehicle industry.
