Hermès' $23,000 Mushroom Paperweight Sparks Online Ridicule, Brand Cites Limited Stock

Deep News11-05

On November 5, a viral social media post criticized Hermès International SA for selling a large mushroom-shaped paperweight priced at 23,000 yuan ($3,150), with netizens mocking it as "blue thin mushroom" (a Chinese internet meme pun).

The product, listed on Hermès' mini-program, is manufactured in France using a combination of crocodile leather, calfskin, and cowhide. It features glass and polystyrene beads for flexibility and measures 18cm in height with a 21cm diameter.

When questioned about the significant price difference compared to other paperweights, Hermès' customer service explained that pricing reflects material quality, craftsmanship, and corporate decisions. They emphasized that petit h creations like this are unique, with rare leathers commanding premium pricing over traditional materials.

Regarding sales figures, the representative stated, "We cannot disclose sales data, but limited stock remains available for purchase via our mini-program."
