From Semiconductors to E-Paper: Guiyang's Nanming District Launches Industrial Transformation

Deep News15:04

Located approximately 5 kilometers from Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport, a cluster of modern, grey-and-white standard factory buildings unfolds across the hilly terrain. Gone are the scenes of traditional smokestack industries; in their place stands a sleek, contemporary complex—the Nanming Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park. This area, once confined to just 0.3 square kilometers of industrial land, is now becoming a living testament to Guiyang's "Strengthening Industry to Revitalize the City" strategy.

Ninety years ago, the Long March illuminated the land of central Guizhou, and the strategic wisdom of the Red Army's feint on Guiyang still resonates in the city's history. Today, a different kind of "Long March"—a new journey of industrialization from "spatial constraints" to "industrial breakthrough"—is unfolding in Guiyang.

In recent years, Guiyang has steadfastly advanced its industrial-strengthening strategy, fully implementing the directive to "prioritize industry and focus on manufacturing." In October 2024, the Guizhou Nanming Economic Development Zone (referred to as "Nanming EDZ") was approved for establishment; it was officially inaugurated in November 2025, with a planned "one core, two wings" industrial spatial layout covering 7.82 square kilometers. The Nanming Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park serves as the core, defining its industrial positioning with "one primary and one special" clusters: a digital-intelligent industrial cluster and a distinctive light industrial cluster, aiming to accelerate industrial development.

For a long time, the semiconductor industry has been concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions, with few successful cases of integrated circuit industry breakthroughs in western counties and districts. However, in Guiyang's Nanming District, a semiconductor industrial cluster centered on third-generation materials is rapidly emerging, with leading enterprises setting up and commencing production, continuously unleashing new "chip" momentum.

From 0.3 to 7.82 square kilometers, the number of "above-scale" enterprises (including industrial enterprises above a designated size, construction enterprises with qualifications, wholesale, retail, accommodation, and catering enterprises above a designated size, and service enterprises above a designated size) has reached 144, with the output value of industrial enterprises above designated size reaching 5.785 billion yuan. The Nanming EDZ has transformed from "drawing on a blank sheet" to "gathering momentum." The driving force behind this transformation lies within the workshops, production lines, and laboratories of its enterprises.

The Spark of Semiconductors

"We started with 0.45-micron process technology and iteratively advanced to 0.11-micron analog circuit technology. This process is now leading domestically, with some indicators surpassing international peers," said Chen Zhenyu, a relevant person in charge at Taixin Semiconductor (Guizhou) Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Taixin Semiconductor"), his eyes filled with determination as he spoke about the technological journey. Standing before an RF module test bench, he pointed to a chip the size of a fingernail, explaining, "Ordinary drone image transmission modules have a communication range of only 5 kilometers. Our gallium nitride image transmission module chip can extend the transmission distance to 10–15 kilometers, with communication in high-end products reaching up to 300 kilometers. Its advantages in anti-interference and high power are irreplaceable."

Established in 2019, Taixin Semiconductor is an integrated circuit enterprise specializing in the design and R&D of high-end RF chips and RF modules using third-generation compound semiconductors. In 2024, it relocated its headquarters to the Nanming Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park and commenced production in 2025. Its third-generation semiconductor RF chip industrial project, with a total investment of 150 million yuan, aims to build a production base for microwave RF device packaging and system micro-assembly.

According to Chen Zhenyu, Taixin Semiconductor focuses on the R&D and design of high-end RF chips and modules using gallium nitride (GaN) and gallium arsenide (GaAs). Its core team hails from institutions like Tsinghua University and Xidian University, and includes seasoned industry experts. Compared to traditional materials, GaN has a higher bandgap width, electron saturation rate, and thermal conductivity, making it inherently suitable for high-frequency, high-power, and high-tolerance harsh environments.

"RF chips are crucial for the autonomy and security of the industrial chain. In earlier years, high-end processes were monopolized overseas, so we had to tackle the hard problems," Chen said, noting that the company's annual R&D investment accounts for 25% to 30% of its revenue. "The chip industry heavily relies on experience. Products are mostly customized, requiring significant investment. Each chip revision involves two to four repeated tape-outs; there are no shortcuts."

This technological accumulation is translating into market returns. Chen Zhenyu stated that the company's revenue was approximately 19 million yuan in 2024, increased to about 34 million yuan in 2025, and is projected to reach 60 million yuan in 2026. "We are already engaging with various industrial funds, and a company listing is also being planned. Simultaneously, we are establishing a doctoral workstation and collaborating with local universities in Guizhou to continuously optimize our processes."

The World on "Paper"

In contrast to the microscopic world of Taixin Semiconductor, within the Class 1000 cleanroom of Lianji Electronics (Guizhou) Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Lianji Electronics"), an industrial revolution of "paper-thin" proportions unfolds. Crisp, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly electronic paper display modules are produced and shipped worldwide.

In the company's exhibition hall, rows of electronic shelf labels are displayed, featuring three-color, four-color, and full-color screens of various specifications. The images are clear and soft under natural light, and prices and product patterns remain stable without consuming electricity. With a light touch on the refresh button, the screen switches quickly without ghosting.

"Electronic paper utilizes bistable reflective display technology. It doesn't rely on backlighting, generates no heat during operation, and consumes minimal power only when refreshing the image. A single button battery can last 3 to 5 years, and some products are paired with solar power, completely eliminating the hassle of frequent battery changes. Traditional paper price tags in supermarkets require repeated printing and manual replacement, incurring huge costs in consumables and labor. Our products are reusable, aligning with the global trend of carbon reduction," explained Lv Qihong, Deputy General Manager of the R&D Center at Lianji Electronics, as he picked up a small electronic price tag.

Lianji Electronics was founded in Shenzhen in 2004, was introduced to Nanming District through a signing agreement in 2022, and officially commenced production in 2023. The company has built a Class 1000 cleanroom and fully automated electronic paper production equipment in the Nanming Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park, enabling smart production of electronic paper display modules and providing one-stop OEM, ODM, design, and manufacturing services. Its products are applied in smart retail, transportation, healthcare, education, logistics, and other fields.

Electronic paper, the company's main product, is an electronic display similar to paper, capable of continuously changing and refreshing displayed content like common LCD screens. "Back then, we inspected many parks. We learned that the Nanming EDZ offers comprehensive access to high-speed rail, airport, and subway, with well-planned park layouts. The investment promotion team had deeply studied the electronic paper industry and fully supported us through the entire process of landing, facility setup, and customer factory inspections. The factory now employs over 200 staff, with 90% of technical backbone personnel relocated from Shenzhen. We are simultaneously recruiting and training local R&D talent," Lv Qihong stated.

He added that the factory currently has a planned monthly capacity of 3 million units, with product sizes ranging from 0.97 inches to 32 inches, and plans to expand into large-size commercial advertising screens of 42 inches and 75 inches in the future. "Before 2021, the ratio of domestic to overseas orders was 9:1, with strong overseas market demand. Now, as domestic labor costs continue to rise and digital transformation in supermarkets and logistics accelerates, the order ratio has adjusted to 7:3. The 2025–2026 period is a critical time for domestic demand explosion. Our long-term goal is to capture 25% to 35% of the global electronic paper module market share," Lv said.

Local Flavors Going Global

Entering another supporting factory building in the park, the exhibition and live-streaming experience area of Guizhou Qianbei Ma Lamb Smart Agriculture Technology Development Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Qianbei Ma Lamb") neatly displays pre-packaged lamb rice noodles, canned Ma lamb, sour soup base, and more. Centered on the Qianbei Ma lamb, the company is dedicated to agricultural services, technology development and promotion, and has built a comprehensive industrial chain covering ecological breeding, slaughtering and processing, cold chain logistics, deep processing, brand marketing, and restaurant chain development.

"Qianbei Ma lamb is a unique breed from the Guizhou plateau, adapted to mountainous grazing environments. The meat has no gamey odor, is rich in protein and various trace elements, and possesses high nutritional value and market recognition," introduced Xiang Xu'anji, President of Qianbei Ma Lamb. The company has achieved integrated operations from breeding stock cultivation and cooperative farming to deep processing products (such as lamb snacks, hotpot ingredients, chilled meat, etc.), ensuring controllable product quality and an efficient supply chain.

Qianbei Ma Lamb has established close cooperative relationships with local farmers through a "company + cooperative/family farm + farmer" model, driving income growth for farmers. Xiang Xu'anji stated that the company has its own breeding farms in Xishui, Zunyi, collaborating with tens of thousands of local family farms and cooperatives, purchasing over 20,000 meat sheep last year. "As long as the sheep meet standards and pass inspection, we pay farmers directly and promptly, striving not to delay payments to farming households."

"Our group has split into several specialized companies for division of labor and collaboration. A subsidiary handles the breeding of Qianbei mountain Ma lamb, the Nanming factory is responsible for deep processing production, and an independent brand company operates national restaurant outlets. In the future, we will continue to deeply explore the value of Guizhou's distinctive agricultural products," Xiang Xu'anji added.

The Industrial Long March

Prosperous industry leads to prosperity across all sectors; a strong industrial base strengthens the economy. Since its establishment, the Nanming EDZ has positioned new industrialization as the strategic fulcrum for high-quality development, going all out to prioritize, develop, and advance industry, forming the "one core, two wings" industrial spatial layout.

The "one core" is the Nanming Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park, with a planned land area of 0.51 square kilometers. It has already built 638,300 square meters of standard factory buildings, is adjacent to the Shuanglong Airport Economic Zone, and boasts comprehensive industrial and supporting facilities. The "northern wing," the Hongyan area, is close to the main urban area, with a planned area of 1.3 square kilometers, including 757.8 mu of industrial land. It has built 81,400 square meters of standard factory buildings, with 88,700 square meters under construction. The "southern wing," the Erge area, has prominent logistics advantages, with a planned area of 6.01 square kilometers, including 1,877.35 mu of industrial land, and has built 177,800 square meters of standard factory buildings.

According to a relevant person in charge of the Nanming Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park, the "one core, two wings" layout primarily enhances industrial upgrading competitiveness through "integrated industrial planning, precise spatial layout, and complementary regional coordination." Currently, the park has a high level of enterprise production and capacity utilization, with initial scale achieved in the digital-intelligent industry and ecological characteristic food industry clusters.

Faced with the trend of accelerating technological iteration and intensifying competition in the intelligent manufacturing industry, how can the park maintain industrial vitality and continuously attract high-quality innovative enterprises? In response, the relevant person in charge stated that by leveraging provincial and municipal resources, the park will introduce upstream and downstream supporting enterprises to achieve resource leverage and industrial integration. It will encourage enterprises to increase R&D investment, implement intelligent upgrades, and build digital workshops and smart factories, empowering traditional industry upgrades and emerging industry development through digital transformation. The park will also actively participate in the industrial chain division of labor and collaboration with the Chengdu-Chongqing region, undertaking the transfer of industrial segments such as electronic information, smart terminals, and robotics, and accelerating the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.
