Data: Crypto spot trading activity continued to shrink, with average daily turnover last week falling to about $15 billion, a year-to-date low

According to analysis by The Kobeissi Letter, data from 44 spot exchanges tracked by Kaiko shows that the daily average trading volume in crypto spot markets dropped to approximately $15 billion last week, the lowest level of the year, a decline of about 70% from the January peak. For comparison, there were two trading days in February when volume exceeded $100 billion.

It notes that since December 2025, the daily average trading volume trend has declined by around 50% to $20 billion, also the lowest of the year. Meanwhile, trading volume remains highly concentrated, with the top six exchanges accounting for over 60% of total trading activity, indicating that liquidity in the crypto market is drying up.

FBI agent accused of stealing $1 million in crypto, allegedly turned to ChatGPT for vacation plans

Patrick Yaroch was arrested after allegedly stealing about $1 million in cryptocurrency from "adversarial cryptocurrency accounts," the Aug. 1 affidavit says. He allegedly began transfers in late 2024 or early 2025 after finding wallet keys and made about a dozen transfers. He told investigators he was frustrated an "adversarial nation" could use crypto and told a DOJ employee he "made some very poor decisions related to cryptocurrency wallets." Yaroch, a supervisory special agent in the FBI's counterintelligence and espionage division, was fired July 31.

Yaroch said he mixed personal and crypto funds and used ChatGPT to ask how to spend or invest $1 million and about leaving the U.S.; the affidavit says ChatGPT recommended Portugal. He purchased a ticket to Portugal departing Sept. 3. He has been charged with interstate transportation of stolen goods and receipt of stolen goods, securities and money, according to a court document.
