CMG Advances Industrial Innovation Through Technology, Paving the Way for High-Quality Development

Deep News05-11

Brands are a key symbol of high-quality development, and strengthening brand building is an inherent requirement for cultivating new quality productive forces. Since the establishment of China Brand Day on May 10, 2017, the initiative has now entered its tenth year. On May 11, a special feature titled "Deepening Brand Building, Demonstrating Responsibility of the Times" was published, which included a report on China Merchants Group (CMG). This report details how CMG is driving industrial innovation through technological advancement, infusing new momentum into its century-old foundation and writing a new chapter in high-quality development. How can a century-old golden brand shine even brighter? Established in 1872, China Merchants Group insists on leading with technological innovation to inject new vitality into its longstanding legacy and continue its journey of high-quality development.

On April 26, the 180,000 cubic meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier "Georgetown" was successfully delivered and departed from the China Merchants Heavy Industry dock in Nantong, Jiangsu. This vessel, independently designed and built by China Merchants Shipping, a subsidiary of CMG, represents a significant achievement. LNG carriers are often called the "crown jewel of shipbuilding" due to the extreme technical challenges involved, including withstanding temperatures as low as minus 163 degrees Celsius. The successful delivery of this vessel marks a major breakthrough for Chinese shipyards in the construction of large-scale clean energy carriers.

In recent years, CMG has comprehensively accelerated its "Third Entrepreneurship," establishing a fourth business segment focused on "technology and innovation industries." This move promotes the integrated development of "research-investment-operation." The group is vigorously developing new quality productive forces, empowering traditional industries with technology, and nurturing and expanding emerging industries by focusing on three key tracks: digital intelligence technology, life technology, and green technology. This strategy aims to lead industrial innovation through technological advancement.

Notable innovations from CMG include the world's first physical engineering model for a pedestrian "floating tunnel" developed by China Merchants Communications Research, a self-developed robotic dog from the CMG Lion Rock Hill AI Laboratory, and a medical surgical robot project in collaboration with The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

From independently designing and building LNG carriers to constructing a physical model of a pedestrian floating tunnel; from comprehensively advancing digital and intelligent transformation to establishing the Lion Rock Hill AI Laboratory to fully develop artificial intelligence; from independent research to joint development, achieving technological breakthroughs in projects such as green carbon dioxide conversion and bio-manufacturing, medical surgical robots, and new perovskite photovoltaic materials—CMG's technological achievements continue to emerge, activating a new engine for high-quality development.

CMG will anchor itself to the goal of building a strong technological nation. Guided by the principle of achieving high-level self-reliance and strength in science and technology, the group will accelerate breakthroughs in cutting-edge technologies and the commercialization of scientific achievements. It will promote the deep integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation, ensuring that its century-old golden brand shines even brighter.
